I am new to the Android platform and I've only had the M8 a week or so. I have lots of questions and some concerns. The most pressing of these is that I hit Force Stop on Google Play Services and I cannot figure out how to restart the app. I have searched online for an answer to no avail.

All the selections are greyed out. I have tried to clear the cache and restart. Here's a screenshot to illustrate.

Please help and thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forums.
Restarting (as in full shutdown) the device should restart Play services.

Edit: I just took a look at mine (I haven't force stopped Play services) and the same buttons are greyed out too.
Is Play services running?

When I use the play store app, it gives me a log in error. I can't access the app. I tried to install an app from the browser to see if it would try to install and reboot play services, but I got another error and it didn't download. Play Store is telling me that it is installed (on the browser version) but it does not appear in my app list.

Edit: I switched the phone over to ART. I have read that apps are optimized for ART so that may restart Play Services in the process. I figure the worst case scenario is that I will have to perform a hard reset or I'll brick it and have to go back to my ancient iPhone 4.

Have you done a factory reset?

Actually, the conversion to ART seems to have fixed the issue. I was able to log into Google Play and download the app that I had previously tried to download.

Don't worry, I have plenty of other questions on my mind about this new phone that I will roll out in the next few days.:)

If you haven't tried it yet disable fastboot (in settings>power) then restart your device. My understanding is that with fastboot enabled the phone keeps the RAM powered up. This may keep your Google play services disabled.

There are 2 types of shutdown. Holding the power button past the restart screen will present you with a full shutdown, the equivalent of a battery pull. Hope you know that.

That is helpful to know for future use. Switching to ART seems to have solved my immediate problem and as a side benefit, I came home from work today with 71% battery life remaining.
