Messenger or Hangout getting duplicate texts

I use a Moto G 2014 with stock android 5.0.2 , I don't like the default messaging app so wanted to use either messenger or hangout. The problem is even if I change the default messaging option to any of these 2, I always get duplicate texts. Not sure why.

You need to go in to Hangouts and disable the SMS feature if you no longer want to use that option.

He is not trying to do that though, he's getting duplicate messages in hangouts and wants to use it for sms.

Try and settings hang out as the default text messaging application. 4.4 has this option but my current phone has 4.3 and I can't find this option anywhere (Kyocera hydro life)
