Microphone issue doesn't make sense

I really can't remember if I had this issue before or after I replaced the screen on my Xiaomi Mi Max 3 so I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue.

You would think it's a hardware issue until you read its symptoms because it doesn't make sense to me.

When I speak to someone using my network provider, the person I speak to says when I use my phone's speakerphone they can hear their own voice and often sounds squeaky. When it's not on speakerphone it's fine, however, when using WhatsApp to make the call it's the exact opposite!

Has anyone had this issue before? I don't want to replace my phone but if I can verify it's a hardware issue then I'll feel better knowing I don't have much of a choice.

Thanks very much and hope you can help.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I did try to log in before I posted the question but there was no button to click to do so, maybe it was my Firefox up to its shenanigans again!

I replaced the screen a while back. I've only took a phone apart a couple of times so it wouldn't surprise me if I upset something at the time.

That said, it just seems weird that the issue with WhatsApp is the exact opposite. I don't understand how that works if it is a hardware issue.

Thanks again.

I wonder if the screen replacement might have affected the secondary mic (at the top of the phone), which is typically utilized for speakerphone calls as well as noise cancellation for regular calls. 3rd party calling apps will sometimes use the secondary mic as well.

I use Wi-Fi and data.

I think I'll have to make a list of scenarios to exhaust:

Call using Wi-Fi.
Call using data (WhatsApp & network).
Someone else calling me using the above.
Call using above again but outside and/or a different location.

I don't know if it's always the case because I often use my PC to make WhatsApp calls.
Hopefully I will put them all to the test today with my wife....she will be pleased!
