Microphone sensitivity adjustments for loud concerts?

The video quality of the GS4 is great, but at a concert when the volume is very loud, there is quite a bit of distortion. The HTC One and even the iPhone 5 do much better in this area.

You can tell that the HTC is dynamically adjusting either or both the sensitivity and the input frequency levels. But my friend ran out of battery while I had two spares. There is never a perfect phone is there?


Any suggestions? I looked in the Play Store to see if there were any utilities but could not find any.

I just shot an indoor metal show and was extremely impressed by the sound.
Keeping the handset in a static position and focused up above the crowd helped me out a lot. Try to stay away from loud talkers or people singing next to you.
I'm also interested in tweeking settings but it's hard to test at the shows I'm at cause they've all been no cam/vid allowed shows so I'm incognito.

If you look at the two videos there is a drastic difference between audio. How I hold my phone makes no difference.

Yeah I know it's drastic. Is this outside? It seemed to distort as it rotated but seemed to just slur the mid levels, the bass is definitely overblown. Mine really sits on the mid/high levels and almost ignores the bass though they are clear... I wish we had some control. I'm jealous of that HTC bass there.
My daughter's band and choir concerts come out great though ;)

It was outside but had a very high volume. You can easily tell the HTC One is actively making adjustments to compensate. The GS4 is making none. I got a recommendation on another forum to try using the mic that came with the phones headset. I would also be interested in a high quality wired mic preferably stereo.

Hoping to hear some response of how to enable Auto-gain control on certain audio device input options. The info here will show you how to adjust the audio sensitivity when video recording if you are rooted.

The file /system/etc/snd_soc_msm/snd_soc_msm_2x_Fusion3 is the audio configuration file.
It can be open and edited directly on the device using any text editor.


Here is the settings for the "camcorder" profile when recording video in the camera app:

These percentages can be lowered and it greatly affects the recording sensitivity of the microphones when video capturing. There is a difference in volume levels per channel, guessing that one microphone is designed more sensitive than the other. It's be a good idea to keep the difference in percentages the same between each channel if you decide to adjust them. I'd make a copy of this file for "just in case" if you cannot re-flash your /system with a rom.zip file in your recovery if you mess anything up.
