All of a sudden, and for no apparent reason, the microphone only works on speaker. No one can hear me on the other line on the normal microphone. Switch to speaker and all is well.

Well, this is actually my wifes phone, and I've been tasked to fix it. Help, please. Marital bliss is at stake

Make sure no build up in those area, I usually clean with tooth brush , earpiece and microphone.

I agree with mustang7757. Speakerphone uses the secondary mic at the top of the phone, which could explain why it still works that way.
