After using this for quite a while, I suddenly have 2 conversations for each group chat. One is in MMS and one is in RCS. How do I fix this and can I combine the two chats? The MMS is when I'm using the computer and the RCS is from my Pixel.

Welcome to Android Central forums.

I didn't think it would be possible but I asked Google, the creator of both RCS and Android, and they say No.

No, you cannot directly combine MMS and RCS threads to the same number on most phones, as they are technically different messaging protocols, even if they are sent to the same recipient number; your phone will typically create separate conversation threads for each type of message depending on the network capabilities and your phone's settings. [1, 2, 3]
Key points to remember: [1, 2, 3]

  • Different protocols: MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) is a standard SMS extension for sending multimedia like pictures and videos, while RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a more advanced messaging protocol offering features like group chat, read receipts, and higher quality media sharing.
  • Network dependency: Whether a message is sent as MMS or RCS depends on the network capabilities of both the sender and recipient.
  • Separate threads: Even if you send an MMS to a number that also has RCS capability, your phone might still display it in a separate conversation thread from RCS messages to the same number.
