Miss some of my Moto X features. Replacements?

I really loved Motorola Connect since I could easily text from my computer. Any recommendations for a product that replaces that?

The wife liked that Moto X would read out text messages and she could respond via voice while driving, anything like that for Nexus 5X?

Thanks

Google Voice with Hangouts will replace Connect. You just have to let your contacts know that it is you since it will be a 2nd phone number. :) Using Hangouts, you can text from your computer--any computer--or your handset.

There are some apps on Google Play that will allow for Text by Voice. I'm exploring them myself but haven't settled on anything. For now I have set up a Tasker profile that I turn on manually to read my text messages out loud. I just use OK Google to reply. It is a little more clunky than Moto Voice, but I think once I learn to use some of the Tasker plug-ins (like AutoVoice and maybe AutoLocation or AutoNotification) then I can come closer to the Moto Voice experience.

Also waiting for Tasker to update before I set more things up. Right now it is in beta for Marshmallow....

I've never used hangouts as my SMS app but do you really need a separate google number to be able to text from desktop with Hangouts? That is kind of a deal killer.

There other third party text apps like Mighty Text that allow you to text from desktop, tablet, etc.

+1 on Pushbullet. I have it and I really like it. You need it on both your phone and desktop PC. I have it as an extension on Chrome. What happens is, when the phone receives a message or even a phone call, it send a notification to your desktop. You can reply to sms messages without touching your phone.

No, you don't need to set up a phone number. I started using Hangouts after switching from an iPhone to Android as an iMessage replacement for people using iPhones that don't have unlimited text plans. All you need is for both parties to have gmail addresses. It works really well and you can use it on a desktop in any browser.

Damn I really miss a lot of my moto X features...

Chop twice for flashlight is genius. And I've been very confused when the screen shuts off while I'm reading something on the 5x. Attentive display should be standard on every device these days.

I actually hated the chop twice gesture. Too slow and the vibration revving up was too much - horrible. I'd rather pull the notification bar down and tap the icon.

The google number is free and you can pick a cool number from anywhere you want. You can use it as a unifying number that rings your computer, phone, tablet.... everything.... or dont use it at all. It's quite painless and a very powerful tool if you choose to use it.

it really is. i miss it dearly.

My moto x sucked me back in...

Messed around with it today, I can't stray from it. Even with the random shut downs when I'm supposed to have 15-20% battery left, I'm still getting better batter life than on the 5x.

First time I read something and the display didn't shut off, I became happy again.

5x needs some work. I miss my nexus 4. Hell, I miss my nexus S! But the moto x was my first non nexus device in tears, and I think it didn't plan on being a place holder. I'm disappointed, but I think I'll be putting the 5x in a fed ex box back to Google on Monday...

What do you hate about it so much? I'm also coming from the Nexus 4 and this phone (5X) is leaps ahead in most areas. Project Fi is working great as well and $20 less a month than my straight talk plan!

Never said I hated it. If I came from my nexus 4 I would probably be completely happy. My Moto X just seems to be calling me back. Having both devices side by side I'm just disappointed by the 5x. The display is much worse, obnoxiously larger dimensions given the same display size, and the lack of Moto features...

I got it specifically for Fi. I'm using straight talk as well. I tested my mom's Fi sim in my Moto X, and it works. Won't switch over to sprint, but I get great data on T-Mobile. I'm thinking of just trying to get away with that for a while and see what happens.

Have used Google Voice for several years as my main number and only give out my actual cell number to personal friends and family, but then I still tell them to use my Google Voice number. We can set it up to ring any number of phones that you want and wherever you are it will ring those phones. You can text on any device and it is seamless. It is actually better than the Motorola texting capabilities. A couple phones ago I had a Motorola and still use my Google Voice on it because of that reason. It's very easy to set up and you can also block numbers very simply if you don't want them to contact you either via text or calling. Then if you ever decide to switch carriers and don't want to port your number or if you change devices it's all seamless. You can free yourself from any carrier and any device because you'll have the same number and use the same apps.

Has anyone figured out which Active Notification app is the most Moto X like? I've tried a few but none of them have come close to working as well as the Moto X.

I think you mean Active Display, which become Moto Display?

Ambient Display is the closest thing [sadly], and it is a far cry from the sophisticated implementation of Moto Display.
