MMS doesnt work over WiFi

I've had this issue since my Evo was new. I get a transient error when I receive an MMS message if Im connected to wifi. It hasnt been a huge deal since I dont get many anyways. It turned into a matter of principal for me that Sprint wouldnt even acknowledge its an issue. I went to the repair center as well as spent many hours on the phone with tech support. After a long painful struggle they agreed to send me a new phone... in a month.

I've since tried many different ROMS and of course always checked that function just to see if it magically started working again. None of them did until ZipEE's 2.0 Desire ROM. It's ported from Verizon so I dont know what/how they made it work where sprint didnt. I know theres not alot of people in my situation, but I did google it and Im not alone.

I was just gonna throw out the suggestion there for some crafty person to pull the MMS functionality from the new Sense and make a patch for the older ones. Hopefully they'll get the camera working in ZipEE's release soon and Ill start using it as a daily driver anyways. Or better yet, HTC will just give us the new Sense for ours EVO's.

MMS shouldn't go over wifi at all, only your cellular connection (doesn't have to be 3G, but it helps I think).

Exactly, that and sms doesnt go over wifi. Thats not data nor is treated like data, it goes over cell connections. If you get decent to poor connections, then you shouldnt have a problem sending a message.

thats just the way it is and always has been... all sprint services (football,nascar, mms, nav, tv, etc) require a cell signal... its not an evo problem, all sprint phone are like that

Evo mms WILL NOT WORK when connected to wifi

Hello all first time posting and i just wanted to vent alittle and see if anyone else was having this problem or not. Long story short mms will not work on my evo when i am connected to any wifi signal. i have spent countless hours on the phone and in the store. today at the store they had never even heard about it and when i told the preceeded to test every evo in the store and none of them would download mms with the wifi signal.
i am trying not to be to picky and such buit for such a high end phone and the extra money we pay for it y has this not been addressed??? anyone else had this problem and does any one fo yur evos work cause the guy at the store said he would replace my evo if we couold just get one to work....btw my evo is a white one purchased from best buy...thank you and look forward to seeing some responses

I have the same issue with stock mms but it seems to work, partly at least, since I switched to Handcent. I say partly because sometimes I will get a rush of several messages at once. Also sprint tv won't stream on wifi either.....

yeah i noticed that...i just dont understand how they think its not a problem when my blackberry and the palm pre i had would be connected to my wifi and still receive mms....

Also for whatever *** backwards reason, it is apparently only affecting the white EVO's sold by best buy! I got my replacement phone... another white one, and again it wont receive MMS when connected to wifi.

I'm aware that MMS doesnt send over wifi, it uses the carriers data connection but nonetheless it will not work if you are on wifi. I have 2 friends with black Evo's and theirs works just fine.

I should also add, I've found MMS through WIFI to work with Cyanogen 6 ROM as well. So if you want it to work, try either that rom or ZippEE's desireHD port over at XDA. Id go with CM6 personally since the camera works, and its just a nice ROM. 4g isnt working in either ROM but Im not in an area with 4g yet so it isnt a concern.

again, all sprint phones will not recieve mms over wifi. your friends might be workiing becuase of there phone setting. they have wifi conntected, but didnt turn off the 3g data. So the 3g data is running in the background (whether they are aware of it or not). if the phone needs to wake up 3g, it will, and on your friends case, it wake up the 3g to recieve the mms so they got their mms.

I believe that's just how it works. That's how it was on my Palm Pre as well.

I'm assuming that you mean even with mobile data turned on, you cannot receive mms if you are connected to wifi. I also have a white Evo and can receive and send mms just fine when 3g and wifi are on simultaneously.

Yes with 3g and wifi on I cannot receive them. It will give me the message saying I have one, and who its from, then just a thing that says downloading. After about 2 minutes I get an error in the notification bar that says something about a transient error.

When I turn off wifi, they come through just fine. With 2 different phones. Like I said though, I'm running CM6 now and they work either way so Im a happy camper.
