MMS wont work via wifi

All of the sudden out of no where my Nexus 5x cannot receive or send any MMS (group or picture texts) when it is connected to any wifi network. When I disconnect it from wifi it is able to receive and send the messages. Tried researching for a possible solution, have not found out yet. Please help.

MMS is a file on the carrier's server, pointed to by SMS - and SMS can only work on 2G at the moment.

When you're using WiFi do you still have mobile data enabled?

My son's mms does not work unless he enables data. He keeps his data off because he does not have unlimited data. He has a Note 4 on Sprint Network. He is trying to use the Messsage+ app.
