I know I can tether using the PDANet app, but I'd prefer to use the Fascinate's hot spot capability. Is there a way for me to do this without coughing up the monthly fee to Verizon? Could it be activated by rooting?

I appreciate the responses, even if they weren't terribly informative. ;-) j/k

I want to activate the hotspot feature for use with my PS3, since I've got no internets at home. I could use tethering, but that requires hooking up my phone to my laptop and my laptop to the PS3, which is a hassle. If I could just activate the hotspot feature, boot up the PS3, and go, it would be much simpler.

just be careful you don't overdo it

Rooting allows you to use a different app. Don't use the VZW app as you would still get charged for it.

Apps you can use once you are rooted to tether are "wifi tether" or "barnacle" either or are good but the wifi tether is free

I've used Wifi Tether on a rooted Moto Droid 1 running 2.2, and it works very well.

On the incredible with froyo you could do the ##778 trick without rooting. I won't go into any more detail, but do a search and you should see what you're looking for. Hopefully it works on the Fascinate too.

I want to tether my Galaxy to my laptop, can I do that for free or is it just like the hotspot where I'll have to pay $20 per month?

Try EasyTether. Doesn't require root either. Only down side is that it's not a WiFi solution. As long as you don't mind using a USB cable, it works great...
