mobile network turns on by itself, can't turn off

Hi,

I just got a Thunderbolt two days ago. Today I noticed that the Mobile Netwok 4G symbol was on although I know I had turned it off. My boss went through my settings and turned off a sync option and said it shouldn't happen again, but as I walked out of his office it reappeared. When I go into Settings, the green check mark isn't on although it says I'm connected (which I am). If I touch it, it says Turning On despite the fact that it's already on.

Any idea on how I can get it to stop turning on by itself? I don't want it checking e-mail or updating or doing anything unless I ask it to.

Thanks!

Sure. Airplane mode will do what you want. Menu | Settings | Wireless & Networks | Airplane Mode.

You are going to have a difficult time finding all of the weather, email and such items that occasionally check the network, and turn them off. Some of it is even going to be the pre-install Verizon bloatware that occasionally checks the network for updates.
The only complete solution is as Frank stated, airplane mode.

Thanks for the answers. I was able to get it turned off by turning on airplane mode, then turning that off (the 4G connection was still on after turning airplane mode off) and then I turned WiFi on & off. That seems to have fixed it.

I guess I'm worried about leaving it on because I don't have an unlimited data plan (I have 4GB) and I have no idea how much is used up by having the phone run all of those tasks throughout the day.

Does airplane mode prevent phone calls from coming in?

Yes. And that is, of course, a problem.

As for data usage... If you just use common sense you should stay under 4GB easy!

Yes, airplane mode prevents phone calls as it disables ALL radios on the phone. As far as data use, you shouldn't even get close to your limit with a few things syncing. Streaming audio or video is what will really eat up your allowance. But, that depends on how much you do it. I stream one or two NFL games a week and my monthly data averages about 1GB total. 4GB is quite a bit, you'd have to be a very heavy user to get close to maxing it out. The My Verizon app on the phone is pretty accurate and allows you to check your data use at anytime, so you can keep an eye on it regardless. :)

Thanks! I doubt I'll be streaming much video or music. I have an iPod Classic that's almost full (120GB) and a 32GB phone doesn't meet my music needs. The only time I'd stream video is if I was stuck somewhere with nothing to do.

I guess I'll turn it back on and allow the mail programs and whatever else to sync again.
