This is an odd problem: When I connect my brand new Moment to my computer running Windows XP Pro via the included USB cable, Windows throws up the "this device can perform faster..." warning, trying to tell me I need to use a USB 2.0 connection...which is exactly what my computer has. Numerous other USB devices I've used over time have worked just fine, including the Motorola V950 Renegade the Moment just replaced. Just to make sure, I transferred a 1.6gb folder from the phone to my computer which took about 20-25 minutes. I transferred the same folder from the micro SD card to my computer via card reader, and it took about a third of that time. I can't find any settings in the phone regarding USB speed.
To be clear, this is a USB port, not a hub. I've tried 3 different cables, including the one which came with the Moment. I even unplugged the hub I use for my webcam, UPS unit and 2 printers. The only other devices plugged into USB ports are my keyboard and mouse. I uninstalled the Sprint SmartView I had used with the Renegade.
Now I have tried installing the Samsung updater from Sprint so that I could upgrade Android to 2.1, but when I get to the step where I connect the USB cable to the phone, I get the popup saying USB device isn't working properly. After uninstalling and reinstalling the Samsung updater tool (rebooting my computer each time) and getting the same thing, removing and replacing the phone's battery and putting it back in download mode when the updater software said to, no luck.
I thought maybe I could get it to work on my laptop, but the Samsung software "hung" during installation and now the hard drive's boot sector is fried and I can't even get XP to re-install. I guess a trip to the Sprint service center is in order, perhaps they can at least get my phone updated for all this hassle I've gone through the past few hours. As for the laptop's hard drive...we shall see.
