Moto E 2nd Gen and Android auto for car

Has anybody tried this phone (Moto E 2nd Gen) with android auto for the car? I purchased this phone for that specific purpose as it has the right OS. Problem is when I attempt a hook up I keep getting an error “android play services has stopped”. It only happens when connected to the car. The software in the car is good as it has been tested. All attempts to correct it have failed.

Have you had any luck with this phone? I have been trying to get a new Moto G 3rd gen 8GB phone connected but I keep getting a "Can't support Android Auto" screen.

Like I said I have exhausted every known possibility and support was no help at all.
Matter of fact I can't even get the update to 5.1 and again support was no help.
I've reset and loaded the phone more times then I can remember.
It's basically a paper weight now.
If you make any progress let me know.
