Mine, unfortunately came with a couple of scratches on the back, so I'm returning it and getting the droid turbo. I got the blue leather. Its quite prone to scratches, so I would suggest getting a case.
I got the natural leather back and it quickly got wear and tear marks. I liked that and thought it made it look better. However, it also developed dirty looking spots in the places where my fingers were usually placed. Stains from natural oils in the skin I guess. That was ugly and I didn't like it.
In an unrelated event I also cracked my screen. I was able to re-order a new one and this time I chose black. I've only had it a week but so far it seems to be more resistant to scuffs and finger stains.
Scratches and blemishes are what I am looking for in a leather product. It should look worn in a year or so. Faded, cracked maybe. Not destroyed or anything but it should show some character.
My Cognac Leather is only about 4 week old, but it is holding up well while aging as expected. The lighter color doesn't show as many scratches, but I expect that it will start looking like a worn shoe after a few more months.
I suppose you could put a case around it and keep it "mint", but why get that nice, soft leather if you aren't going to be touching it? I have come to peace with my electronics getting the "Millennium Falcon" effect- worn corners and edges, a few scratches here and there and maybe a ding or two- reminds me that they have been loved and seen some adventure.
