Moto X Style: is it worth it to upgrade from the Moto X 2014 (aka 2nd gen)?

Hello,

I just ordered the Moto X 2014 1. because of the low price 2. because I thought the Moto X 2015 screen size is way too big for me (but I can be persuaded). Anyways, I was just wondering what were your thoughts. Should I keep the current 2014 edition or return it and wait till Style comes out next month?

I think the third generation Moto X aka Moto X Style aka Moto X Pure Edition is a worthy upgrade from the second generation Moto X.

Moto X Style Pros:

Higher resolution screen
Faster processor
Larger battery
Stereo speakers
Will mostly likely receive updates longer, since it is newer
Better camera
SD card support
Better band support (specifically Band 12 if you're on T-Mobile)

Up for discussion:

AMOLED on the 2nd Gen, LCD on the Style

I personally prefer LCDs, some people prefer AMOLED. The one thing you can't argue with is that LCDs do not suffer from the burn-in that AMOLED displays do.

Screen Size

I like the bigger screen size, but even I'll admit that bigger phones can be harder to carry around in your pocket and harder to use one handed

Gonna hit the two year mark on my first generation Moto X soon. BACK/HOME/TASKS burned in. Same with the status bar. :/

Re: Is Moto Style worth the upgrade from Moto X 2014

I also recently purchased a 2014 X. I think it's the best value going for $300. I was using a OPO prior to the 2014 X and had an OG Moto X prior to that.

Aside from price, the screen size was the other main reason for me picking up the 2014 X. While I was able to handle the OPO @ 5.5" it never felt right to me. The curved back of the 2015 X may have a better in hand feel making the size bump less of an issue.

All that said, I'll be sticking with my 2014 X for at least a year and hopefully pick up a 2015 X next year for $300.

If you think screen is too large, then go with the 2014. Size isn't going to get any smaller. That being said, it is an upgrade in every way, screen, processor, cameras.

I think you kinda answered your own question. if you prefer the smaller display and want to save a few bucks then keep it. if u like the style better and it's worth the extra cash get it ... that's your call though

Mine will be 2 years old in November. The burn in has been noticeable since the one year mark for me.

I'm very tempted by the $ and size of the 2014 to order one. But the apparent improvements of the latest camera, plus battery size and SD card support is making me lean towards the 2015 X or the Droid 2 (which should physically resemble the Play. )

The Style/Pure is worth the upgrade from the 2014 Moto X. 'd suggest going with the Pure version as it will give you some flexibility with resale value if you decide to sell it later in the future.

Re: Is Moto Style worth the upgrade from Moto X 2014

I had burn in twice on two of the three Moto X 2013s I had before I got upgraded to the 2014 by Motorola. Now that the brightness has been cranked back up on 5.1 (I miss the brightness settings on 5.0.2), I've bitten the bullet and bought an app to force full rotation, and I regularly flip my phone 180 degrees to help wear the screen more evenly.

If you're okay with the size, it's probably an okay phone to get if the 14 bites it for whatever reason, but otherwise why spend your money twice?

I'd say it depends.

If you can live with the larger size, then yes, it's a worthy upgrade.

I run with a solid black background on my first generation Moto X. The burn-in only recently started bothering me when Google started updating some of their apps to have a white splash screen.

Mine also will be 2 years in Nov. I haven't noticed any "burn in".

Worthy upgrade? It looks to be a toss up. It will come down to how much 4-500$ is burning in your pocket and how much you like the changes on the 2015. It is definitely not a definite "needed" upgrade for anyone with a 2014.

The 5.1 update has breathed new life into my 2014. It literally is a smoother, snappier, and more responsive experience than my friend's Galaxy S6. As long as there aren't any marked slowdowns in my phone, and as long as it gets Android M, I should be good until the 2016 model.

Since my beloved 2014 X with the bamboo back met an extremely ugly demise last night....my answer is now a resounding yes. I love the Moto X concept and I love that the 2015 version will be universal for all carrier bands (finally). So I'll be buying on Day One.

Same here. Not as bad as my Galaxy Nexus, but still noticeable. Plus I still think any company getting AMOLED's from Samsung are getting subpar screens. Samsung isn't going to sell their best stuff to a competitor. Personally, I've been wanting a Moto X with an LCD. Other than the gigantic size, the new MX seems perfect for me. I'm unsure if the size is a deal breaker for me.
