Moto X: Type by Voice not working

Hi all ... what's the trick to type by voice on the moto x? I am using the Google keyboard. I have 'voice input key' checked/active.

To test, I open a new Gmail, long-press on the comma key and slide my finger up to the microphone icon in the pop-up. However, nothing happens once I lift my finger from the mic icon. I would have expected the phone to start listening for my voice at that point.

You should go back to stock keyboard and you can just click on the mic.

stock keyboard? the Google keyboard is the only keyboard installed on my stock moto x. hehe.

I found the problem -- Google Voice Typing wasn't enabled by default (kind of ridiculous considering it's a moto x).
