I'm having a huge issue with my friends droid (He wants me to mod it) I can't get it to connect to my laptop. I've used usbdeview to get rid of everything that mentions android but I just cannot figure this out at all what so ever. Please help.

You have downloaded and installed the drivers?

Also, try removing them, reboot the computer, reboot the device, reinstall it all.

Have you tried to just download the DMUpdater app right from the DroidMod.org site, you can download right to the phone and root and stuff right from that.

It "finds" the device in device manager but when I adb shell it says device not found.

My phone won't even mount or adb shell anymore but the USB ports are fine as I can connect my external hard drive to all of them and it finds it just fine.

You don't need to do any of that from the computer. That is the old, hard way of doing things. Follow the advice of Jared DiPane above and just go to Droidmod.org on your phone and download the dmupdater.apk and load it directly on your phone. It will automatically create all the correct directories on your SDCard, root your phone, and then you can also choose to load the updated ROM if you want. Oh, and it backs everything up as well, just in case and you can use the same app to load the stock 2.0.1 again if you want. Start to finish, including downloading the app is perhaps 5 minutes. Just make sure you have Wi-Fi turned on. Don't bother to mess with the adb shell and the SDK. It isn't necessary and its just too unreliable.

I just stepped a friend through this yesterday over the phone, sight unseen and he could not believe how easy it was, and wondered why he had ever waited.
