Hey all,

Hoping you can help me come to a decision with regards to whether i should upgrade from my LG G5 to the Pixel 2.

There isn't anything currently wrong with my G5, but i have already had it repaired twice (power button issues) and I am a heavy user so battery life is getting shorter (despite having two batteries for the phone).

So far, these are the things i would likely miss from my G5 and why i haven't purchased the Pixel 2 yet (liking the promo that's on with Google Home Mini):

-Headphone jack (I listen to music a lot, and very frequently at the gym)
-IR blaster (use it sparingly, but it's cool nonetheless)
-Removable/replaceable battery

The Pixel 2 has better hardware, better camera (although not sure if i would miss my wide-angle camera or not?) and is more future-proof not to mention is water-resistant as well (maybe better for damp environments like my pocket at the gym)

I was originally going to just ride out my G5 until it kicked the bucket again, but curious as to your thoughts/opinions on some other pros/cons of switching.

Thanks!

I briefly had the G5 and strongly disliked it, mostly because of software. I've had the Pixel 2 XL since July and it's by far the best device I've ever used. So that's my bias.

Headphone jack is a thing that shouldn't be a consideration, because it comes with a tiny adapter so that you can still use it the same way you do now.

The only drawback for what you've described is the battery. Battery life is fantastic, the best of any flagship phone to my knowledge - but for a very heavy user, if it's not enough, then charging it is the only way to get back up to top. Obviously you can get battery packs and it does charge very fast when you need a top off, but if you can't get past removable batteries, then that might be the end of the consideration. Do you have much experience with doing quick topoffs, such as while driving or with using an external battery pack?

For comparison, my usage is typically only 4-5 hours of screen on time per day. I spend a lot of time listening to music via BT and I have a lot of pick the phone up, do something quick, put it back down type usage. the phone lasts me a day and a half most charges and I rarely let it get below 20%.

I went from the LG G5, to the OG Pixel, to the Pixel 2 XL.

I don't miss the headphone jack, relying on BT and USB-C headphones, and the battery life is so good that I don't miss the replaceable battery at all.

I do miss that wide angle camera though. I loved the hell out of that. But the picture quality on the Pixel 2 XL is far superior to the LG G5 so it was a fair compromise...

Welcome to the forums! Are you thinking about switching to the Pixel 2 or the 2 XL?

As Aquila stated, the lack of a headphone jack can be solved with the dongle; and I've heard that audio quality is superb for the Pixel 2 line. I think you'll be okay with it!

If you do indeed go with the 2 XL, the bigger battery will give you more SOT but in my research, I've learned that the smaller Pixel 2 still does very well on battery life. Plus, Google implemented this cool feature that gives out more of a personalized expectation of how much battery you have left, based on how you use your device. So I think the battery is not only "better," but "smarter," in essence (well, the software is! But I digress).

If you think the jump is worthwhile and you will be satisfied, then go for it! :) Please let us know what you decide!

I would be going to the Pixel 2 and not the 2XL. My hesitations around the lack of headphone jack stems from the inconvenience of having to have a dongle with me, or make another purchase for usb-c headphones.

My usage seems along the lines of yours, Aquila, and i do top-off charges quite a bit with my current phone. I find it odd that the G5 has a larger pixel density than the Pixel 2, yet the screens are night-and-day different from whay I've seen by comparing them side-by-side in store.

Camera is a BIG draw for me as I do like the G5 camera, but appreciate the image quality of the Pixel 2.

I may have to draw up a pros and cons sheet for myself...the $850CND price is also a little high as i could get into a V30 for close to that price too...

Thanks for the responses so far.

I definitely see what you're saying - having the extra steps to take, so to speak, with regards to the dongle, remembering it, etc, can seem a little bit of a hassle. But I'm sure like with all things, after the adjustment period, things will get easier!

With regards to the Pixel 2 camera, it is definitely in a league of its own. My friend has a 2 XL and his photos and videos look fantastic!

Having to use dongle is a bit of an inconvenience for sure, but how many different wired headphones are you using? If you are usually using one set, why not leave the dongle attached to the headphones?

I just got my daughter a replacement dongle for her iPhone 8 and now she leaves it on her headphones cord. I also bought her a couple of spares to go in her stocking. Best Buy had a 25% off 3 or more accessories deal the other night .

Had the G5, V20 and V30.
The pixel camera quality is enough to easily allow me to give up the wide angle on any of those.

I have the Pixel 2 and the V30. Both are excellent. If you like your G5, you might want to consider the V30 as well.
