i really liked my x, and still do. but this bootloader thing has really ground my gears into disliking motorola.

I'm curious...what kind of ultra cool stuff would you be able to do if you could get around the bootloader that you can't do now.

Agreed, I had a Nexus one and loaded some custom roms and while they had some minor gee whizz eye candy there was little substantial functionality that was added that the stock rom didn't have. The biggest thing was tethering.

I see people whining about the encrypted bootloader but so far I've not seen any posts communicating exactly what people are missing out on not being able to install a custom rom.

Just to be clear, I'm not being critical of the OP for switching. I think that everyone should get what ever phone they want. Being ignorant of what unlocking the bootloader can do for your device, I'm curious about what I might be missing. I looked at the video linked a couple of post above, but didn't see anything spectacular. Personally, I'd have a hard time walking away from the X's screen size now that I'm used to it. But the only thing I know for certain is that one day, as much as I like this one, I'll get another phone.

agreed, I mean its kind of cool to hook up a mouse to the phone, but really what is the likelihood that type of functionality is something that would be useful in actual usage.

So far I've no seen any particular function in a custom rom that would temp me to install it.

Back in early days of android, when functionality was very limited, custom roms were the only way to get basic features found in other phones. Android has matured to the point now, that custom roms are more superfluous

Thanks for all your help around here man, it's been appreciated. Good luck with the Fascinate, it looks like a good alternative.

That's what I love about Android, if one manufacturer does something that gets on your nerves you can always choose another without needing to reinvest in a bunch of apps or learning. Good luck with the Samsung!
