Moving text messages off phone to my computer

Hi I have text messages that I would transfer from my phone to my PC. I have done this with photos easily enough to free space up. I have looked at apps but they talk about transferring copies of the messages instead of moving them altogether. What is the best way of doing this?

Messages are saved on the phone as an SQL database, so copying that file to the PC probably would be no more useful than these other apps that save the messages as XML files or others. Is there a reason why you don't want to use those apps that you've researched already?

So would that clear space on my phone if I copied that file to my computer?

It might, but these kinds of backup apps might not copy MMS media (like photos that were sent via text).

How many message threads do you have saved, and how crucial is it to save them? I typically manage my messages on an ongoing basis, deleting threads that aren't important to keep.
