Probably out of luck here but thought I would ask anyways. I know I can use a mp3 song as my ringtone but is there a way I can use it as a text ringtone? I thought i was able to do that back when i had the note5. Might have been another past phone tho. Or they took that away when they did updates. Anyways, thanks for any suggestions. I'm using the stock messaging app.

As far as I know you need a third party program to put it in your notification tones folder. I use ringdroid. It's old, basic but does the trick and it's free. Hope this helps.

I will check that out. Thank so much😁

I've had luck with Zedge & just search for a particular song/tune then notification.

I've been recording and loading my own ringtones for years. As long as it's in the ringtones folder, you can use them for notifications. :-)

Yeah I could do it as ringtone for calls but couldn't figure out how to set it as text ringtone thru that app. Thanks anyways.

Actually, I've done the same for years as well, but what the OP is referring to requires you to put the mp3 file(s) in the notifications folder (for ringtones, it's the ringtones folder). Then they will show up as an option to choose for a text notification. You might have to restart your phone after putting the files in that folder so the system will see them.

I move notification tones from my desktop to my notification folder all the time. Just did some a few days ago. I don't see why it matters if they are notifications or ringones.
Is it because you are trying to use the whole song instead of a few second snippet? Notification tones shouldn't be more than a few seconds long.

All I know is that some files in the ringtones folder won't show up as a choice when trying to change the notifications for texts. However, if I put what I want to be available as a choice for text notifications, in the notifications folder, they always show up as an option. I've been on Android for over a decade and have always done it this way once I realized what was happening.

Actually it don't matter to me if it is few seconds or while song since I got the whole song as my ringtone. I'm just not smart when it come to doing it from my laptop. Can you tell me how to do that? Is it thru USB cord? Thanks

Thanks for your input. Any help on how to do it the way you doing it would greatly be appreciated.

I just put the files on a thumb drive and connect it to my phone and copy them over to my internal storage since that's where the folders are. The path is something like emulated/0. In that "0" location there will be a "Ringtones" folder and a "Notifications" folder. If you don't have a thumb drive adapter or a 2 sided one that plugs right into the phone, just email yourself the files, then save them to the notifications folder in the path I mentioned above. If you need more info, I can make a video of the process.

You might actually need to make the file a shorter length for it to work in the notifications folder. If so, I use Mp3 Cutter specifically for the purpose of making ringtones and/or notification sounds. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mp3.cutter.ringtone.maker.trimmer

Thanks I have a older thumb drive so wouldn't work on my note8 so I'll try the email way when I get home later. And thanks I don't want to make you go thru all that lol. So I'll see how it works😊

Or just upload the file from your PC to Google Drive and then download it to your phone from Drive.

Your ringtones have to be in a folder named Ringtones (upper-case-R). Your notifications have to be in a folder named Notifications. Alarms in a folder named Alarms. It's that simple.

(And if you want to still be able to choose different notifications for different people in SMS, try SMS Popup.)
