MT4G Internet Plans ?

I'll try and shorten a long story.
I had an NS for a week, didnt like it, and returned it to Best Buy.
They were supposed to reverse the two year contract.

I got my phone bill and it still had the $18 + $1.26 tax upgrade charge.
I called TMO to get that taken off and apparently they hadnt reversed
my contract. So the rep fixed that and took the upgrade charge off.

But the reason for this thread is that she said I didnt have 4G internet.
I got the unlimited Android plan when I got with my pre-buy G1.
I had 3000 minutes in Florida, unlimited web and 400 texts.
A few months later I was told I was eligible for the unlimited loyalty plan
which changed my 3000 Florida only minutes to unlimited in the US.

So after the call yesterday I started looking at the TMO website and
I dont see anywhere where they differentiate web packages between
3G and 4G.

The rep said I wouldnt be able to do video chat because I dont have 4G.
Is this true ?
Anyone know ?

The MT4G is noticeably faster than the N1, NS, and G2.
It made me wonder if what she said is just a line they are told to tell people.

Anyone know if thats possible to block 4G to customers ?

I didn't think that they had different plans for 3G/4G since technically 4G is still 3G. It uses the same frequencies as 3G so I don't think they can block it. Is it possible that you don't have HSPA+ in your area yet?

According to the coverage maps Tampa has had it for some time now.
I will probably never use the video chat but I of course
still want the 4G internet.
What the rep said just sounded like a load of road apples
to me.

I don't think it's possible to block either for the same reasons... I think the rep must've been trying to be helpful by warning you there is not 4G service in your area -- though you say there is. Call back and speak with another T-Mobile rep and ask them for clarification.

If the rep doesn't help you or know how to respond, call back again - say "cancel service" on the menu, and it will push you through to their "Retention" department - and ask them the same question. The reps in that department are much more experienced, and will have an answer for you.

EDIT: Deleted post due to bad information apparently. Their 4G list does have Tampa listed.... I was looking at the coverage map. Looked like the shade of purple was 3G to me.... actually, looking at it again I still can't tell whether the shade is 3G shade or 4G shade. I swear it's between the two. Why they would not just use different colors entirely for the different data speeds is beyond me...

Oh Tampa has 4g all right. I pulled around 4-5 meg when I was at the casino a month ago.

Yeah Tampa has the HSPA+.
And the MT4G is the fastest phone I've used.

Just make sure to call customer care and speak to retentions. Tell them to add the MT4G plan for your phone instead of the Android web service. They have a specific web service for this phone and that will ensure that you get the HSPA+ and the HotSpot add-on.

See I'm doubting thats possible.
I already have the hotspot, its just part of 2.2 .
But I dont think they have a "special" plan for this phone.
I spent some time on the TMO website looking at all
the plans and I didnt see anything that would lead me
to believe there are separate HSPA+ plans.

They do have a plan for mytouch phones, but that doesn't cost any more or less than regular android data plans. They also do have an add-on feature for the hotspot that they will charge you for if you get out of control with it.

So are you saying that I dont actually have 4G with the original Android
internet plan I got with the G1 ?
Because thats what the rep was implying.
The current 4G/HSPA+ unlimited is $30.00 and doesnt come with any texts
so that would be another $5.99 for the texts = $35.99.
I'm paying $24.99 for unlimited web and 400 texts now.

I guess I need some way to check the phone for 4G now before I pay
the extra $11.00 + tax a month.

It sure seems like its way faster than anything I've used so far
including the G2 and Nexus S.

I think you're getting cofused with T-Mo 4G and Sprint/Verizon 4G. T-Mo doesn't charge extra for 4G. They've actually said that they won't.

What I'm talking about is for myTouch phones. It's strictly a provisioning from them, the cost is the same. It doesn't matter which myTouch it is (3G, 3GS, 4G), just that they have a different provisioning for myTouch vs regular Android. I know because when I went from the G2 to the MT4G they had to change it. At least that's the excuse they gave me for not getting the OTA. They said they changed it and I got my OTA, so take that for what it's worth. Honestly it coulda just been a line of crap to make an excuse for something.

No. There is only one generic '4G' data plan that works between all of the newer devices. (For example, I got a Nexus S, and the SIM worked with no change in plan, despite it not being one of their 4g devices)

Easy way to check for the 4g speed is to download the netspeedtest.com app and do a speed test

If you get more then 1.5Mb/s then you have 4g

is no way for TMO to block 4G since technically its 3.5something G anyways.
I went to settings/about phone/network while I was in the store and it said
HSDPA on the phone.
The rep in the store agreed that what the rep told me on the phone was bogus.
