multi-tap keyboard?

I know this may sound dumb, but, is there a way to get the keyboard to multi-tap? I work in road construction and at times I need to text with one hand and my fingers are to big for the qwerty keyboard.

I'm in a similar situation but have found using the speech to text feature built in does a good enough job. ?

You can buy a keyboard from the market that offers T9. There are a few. Just search T9 in the market. Don't be afraid to buy one, if you don't like it you can return it within 24 hours for a refund.

The Optimus S supports swype. (got it on an update just under a week ago)
It's not too bad for one handed texting, but you still have to hold the phone (perhaps in a mobile holder?)

Vlingo voice-to-text is pretty much awesome for me.
