i am looking for an app that works like the old music app where i can have some control without unlocking the phone when it sleeps. yes, i have to turn on the screen, but i don't have to unlock it. great for driving. i know i can use the new music app that comes with it, but most of the time it wants to use the streaming feature. i know there is a way to make it only do the offline music, but when you're driving, switching from the streaming to the stored in device is a lot of steps. i'd rather have two different widgets where if i press play on one, it would use the offline music so i can keep the native music app as the streaming. makes it simple to switch between music pools without having to press too many things. again, not just being lazy, but is great when driving. on my old incredible i had a music homescreen where i had the native app widget for in-device music, google music widget for the streaming music, amazon music widget for the ones i had on there, and a pandora widget. all worked great and easy access to music i want just by pressing play on whichever widget i wanted. most worked without unlocking the phone screen, at least the native app did. thanks.

I used to use double twist on my droid x which was pretty nice. I haven't tried it on the GN though because I have all my music on google music.

does double twist work on it's own? when i downloaded it it seemed to only work if i synch it to something on my computer because it kept asking for it. i couldn't even test if i had controls without unlocking the screen when it sleeps.

Hmm I don't see why you don't just use the new music app.. any music you make available offline will only be played directly from the stored music and will never be streamed. If it isn't saved on the device it will automatically stream.

Oh and the new music app also allows you to change/pause songs without unlocking the screen.

this,

you have to start the app, but after that, don't need to unlock the screen, all controls are there when u wake the phone.

As far as the stock music app on the GN you can turn off any syncing, i.e. selecting local music only and it works just as the old version did... heck even better. Also you get the on screen controls when the phone is locked just as you did on the X.

Poweramp is the best music app out there IMHO.
I love it.
I actually dl songs from Google Music to my phone instead of streaming them and they play in PA no problem. It's a great app.

ok, for people who don't understand why i don't just use the stock music app let me state it again : yes, you can just make it play the stored music, but what if i want to stream the music? i have to go into the settings and unclick the button. one thing i hate about ics is that the menu/settings button is now just 3 dots on the side. when you're driving, it's not as easy to try and tinker with your phone (and you shouldn't). it is much easier to just press a button on a widget and your offline music plays, press a button on another widget and your google music plays. if i'm not doing anything, it's fine, but when i'm driving, i don't like having to go into menus and selecting online and offline music.

also, i have tried poweramp and it is not controllable when phone goes to sleep. you have to unlock the screen to skip/pause tracks. i need an app that is controllable without unlocking the screen.

Anyone have a good reason why google would hide your top status bar when the music player's in landscape mode? Are they thinking drivers would be distracted by the notifications? Ooh I got an email - swerve and die? Or is it to gain more screen? They did remove it altogether in the gallery app. I do remember reading somewhere the omission was not by chance but rather by choice. But why?

Sorry I just don't understand the desire to stream music if it's right there on your phone. I just want to listen to music. Plus if it's already downloaded on your phone you'll save on data (even though I have unlimited) and you don't have to wait at all to listen to it. What's the point of making a song unavailable offline if you're just about to listen to it?
