I get my Droid X tomorrow (or Tuesday) and wanted to confirm the steps to a working, well-tuned Froyo (with root) on day one.

1) Root:

Root and Unroot Your DROID X with 1 Click

2) Then, install 2.2 using:

Droid X Froyo

FROM A ROOTED PHONE:

Run "adb shell"
Run "mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/system /system"
Run "mv /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su"
Copy the update.zip (download below) to your sdcard
Reboot into recovery (power down - hold volume down and home button and press the power button)
Run update.zip

3a) Install "Droid X 2.2 Froyo Deodexed":

Droid X 2.2 Froyo Deodexed

3b) Install "Droid-X Clockwork Recovery image. Deodexed Rooted, Froyo'd"

Droid-X Clockwork Recovery image. Deodexed Rooted, Froyo'd

Questions:

** To confirm: should I install "Koush's Clockwork recovery" after step 2?
** Are there newer methods for any of the above steps?

Which of (3a) or (3b) is the recommended path, or is it simply a matter of preference?

Also, I'd like to be able to restore my phone to out-of-the-box stock (in the event I end up totally unhappy with the X). Just to confirm, I can get back to stock using the proper SBF, correct?

Suggestions/pro-tips are appreciated.

From fresh stock DX in 2.1 (must have all original apps/bloatware)

1) easy root app from mkt

2) use root manager & go to system folder & move su from bin folder to xbin folder (make sure in r/w mode, top right or won't let you move file) This maintains root privileges after update.

3) place 2.2 update.zip in root of sd card. Got my working one from
www.4shared.com/get/1uLAgsAC/update.html

Originally, the one I got from Koush's rom manager wasn't signed and wouldn't work :-( maybe it's fixed now, who knows?

4) Turn off phone, hold power + home buttons at boot til recovery triangle appears, hit search button and apply the update.zip

5)Now that you have 2.2 with root, use koush's bootstrap app
http://koush.tandtgaming.com//motorola/droidx/DroidXBootstrap.apk
Run this app and select the 1st button to bootstrap. Now you can install clockwork recovery from rom manager. You can also use bootstrap to then boot into recovery to make backups.

6) after making a 2.2 backup, you can install the deodexed version if you like. I might for the black notification bar...

And finally, if you ever need to go back to stock 2.1, dl the DX .sbf file dubbed "the gift" & make sure you get rsd lite 4.7 + patch or it won't recognize your phone on pc.

Thanks for the informative post!

* You mentioned the Easy Root app from the Market -- didn't this get pulled? Should I use the app from unstableapps.com or will the one from "Root and Unroot Your DROID X with 1 Click" above do the job?

* I'm comfortable on the commandline. Can I do the following with the adb shell instead of purchasing Root Manager?

Run “mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/system /system”
Run “cp /system/bin/su /system/xbin/su”
exit ; exit
Run “adb reboot recovery” to reboot into recovery mode
Apply update.zip

Everything else makes sense after some Googling.

Thanks for your help and for clarifying the rest of the process!

SUCCESS

I ended up using this to root:

GUI DroidX Root Program - Windows Only - Droid X Rooting - AllDroid Public Board - GUI DroidX Root Program - Windows Only - Droid X Rooting - AllDroid Public Board - AllDroid.org > Home

I then used adb shell per my quote above.

The wording in step 5 was accurate, but didn't make perfect sense until I got to actually do it.

Got my backup!

I might wait a day or two until I move to deodexed. Not sure.

Thank you developers and Pyroelite for the pointers!

And you know what? I don't know that I care about OTA updates -- cus I'm sure someone will create a proper ROM once the official's released. ;)

Is there a way to disable OTA updates? Or will it prompt me, assuming that day every comes?

The ROM developers will (should) put out a patch if you're prompted for an OTA update. Usually the ROM blocks it anyways but if it does get through, they should put in a patch, just like I did with my OG Droid and BuglessBeast.

I also agree with you about the OTA. I couldn't care less about an official OTA update. I'll probably just be playing around with custom ROMs for the life of my X anyways. Seems like they'll be rolling out anytime now (Birdman already released one, although basic, still a custom ROM).

how do i install the bootstrap?

I don't understand how to install the freaking bootstrap... there's no actual .apk file, only a zip file with other folders inside
