I have been in a rut lately trying to decide which android tablet should be my first. I have done some research and it seems like the Nexus 10 is the best option but I noticed that Sony is releasing their Xperia Tablet Z in a couple of days. This threw a wrench in my plans. Please guide me!

Depends. What do you value?

Purely based on specs (and benchmarks), the Nexus 10 runs circles around Sony's tablet.

However, if you need water resistance and a nigh indestructible tablet, microSD, or just out right prefer it's design, then the Z is your best bet. However, do know it's much more expensive than the nexus 10, and will cost $500 for the 16GB model compared to $400 for the 16GB nexus 10.

Xperia Z is $100 expensive + tax if applicable
N10 has higher resolution
N10 is Android 4.2.2, Z is 4.1
N10 processor is powerful compared to Z's S4 pro

Z is def much thinner and lighter than N10. design look good, 8 megapixel back camera

Isn't the Xperia like $600? Do the specs of Xperia make up for being 50% more expensive?

You're answer is here:
Sony Xperia Tablet Z vs Google Nexus 10 - Phone specs comparison

Sony Xperia will have SD card support and an IR blaster and what appears to be a better camera, so that's a plus...but it ships with Android 4.1?

I guess it just depends on what features you're looking for. Personally, I like the Nexus 10, and certainly don't see enough here to make me spend that much more money on the Xperia.

Sounds about the same value as an iPad. By that I mean you need to really REALLY like the brand to the N10.

The advantages of the Z are mostly very situational. I don't see water resistance being a variable to many people, you can get a case to protect your tablet, it won't be indestructible but IMO no device is indestructible, someone will find a way. The only thing I see being a good enough reason to consider it is the microSD slot and arguably the design but that's personal preference.
