I'm currently using towel root on my s5. Will the update ruin my rooted s5 or am I safe to download it?

Do not download it. General rule of thumb for root is to never accept an OTA. It can brick your device. Either unroot and update (you'll then have to wait for a new root method) or stick with your current version

Not true, because your rooted the update won't allow you to install it. You would have to Odin back to the stock build and use triangle away to update it, I'd suggest going to XDA and downloading the stock update then reroot it and add what you want after.

There are times when it takes the OTA anyway. In theory it shouldn't happen, but I have seen several members who had issues because it did work. Just to be safe it's better just to not even try it. If he wants to update, he wouldn't be able to root until there is a method for that version.
