Media server killing battery (sorry, another thread)

Sorry, I know there are others but none of their solutions has worked for me. Media server is killing my battery, and fast. I mean a 40% drop in 2 hours yesterday while phone was on sleep with wifi and mobile data disabled. I'm in the UK using S5 900F standard model on kitkat 4.4.2.

Since then I have:
- unmounted Samsung SD card (it only had a few photos and apps on it, had it a week)
- force stopped all "media apps" despite dire warnings as to world ending if I do so etc, and cleared data
- repeatedly cleared cache
- rebooted phone in safe mode and am monitoring. Battery drain is better but media server is still the main culprit at 27% (down from 51% but still..)
I can't keep it on safe mode all day as it's highly inconvenient.

Phone is unrooted, 3 months old so warranty is important. I can't download mediaserver killer etc

I am unable to isolate which media files are causing this or why. I thought it was the SD card which I added recently but it's a Samsung and should work, plus the problem hasn't disappeared after removing it.

I haven't downloaded any apps since the problem started, or downloaded any media files. I have no games on the phone. A little music, Spotify premium (force stop and now disabled by safe mode), 50 photos. Before the mediaserver problem started about a week ago, battery lasted 1 1/2 days at least. I'm not a heavy user of online media (bit of YouTube but never download or watch movies on my phone).

What can I do please? I'm a novice smartphone user so would be grateful if any replies were simple. Thank you.

Re: Media server killing battery (sorry, another thread)

Hi I am in Australia and my S5 had the same problem after I did an update not long after getting the phone. I had to save all my photo's to the sd card then remove the sd card. Clear cache for gallery and music ( back up everything before you do this) then turn off phone take the battery out and leave it out for 30 -40 mins then replace battery BUT DO NOT TURN IT ON charge fully while still turned off once fully charged turn phone back on. This worked for me not sure if it will work for you and if I have remembered every step. I did post the fix on Android Forums a couple months ago and you should be able to find that with a search. I hope this works I am also not very smartphone savvy. Good luck!

Hi Sam! You've already done the most common fixes. If Red suggestion doesn't work you could try a couple of things.

- Disable face recognition in your Samsung gallery. If I remember right there are two different tags in the settings, Buddy and Face.

- Check sync / upload settings in your Gallery and in Google +. Switch them off for a while and see if it makes a difference.

- Have you downloaded any ringtone for calls or messages? If so, set them to default and maybe just delete those tones.

- There's a way to find corrupted media files using your computer. I haven't done it, so search in the Web.

Re: Media server killing battery (sorry, another thread)

Thanks for the suggestions. I ran the phone in Safe Mode all day, unmounted the SD card, and uninstalled Spotify. I have a premium subscription. It has been much better without Spotify (for the moment....). I don't think the problem is a corrupt photo file.
It's annoying as I really like and want to keep using offline streaming of my playlists on Spotify.

Does Spotify keep running when you've closed the app? How can you stop that without losing settings and playlists? Thanks.

Sorry for the late reply. I have some problems with the notifications from this forum in my phone, and I missed your post :(

I haven't used Spotify but I've seen many people reporting the same sort of drain, even when playing offline playlists. The usual fix is clear data, uninstall and install again. Maybe there's some setting in the app to keep all the playlists in the internal storage and don't use the card. I don't know.

You could try this. Install Spotify, charge completely your phone use it for a while. When the Battery is down to 30% or so check your battery stats and post a couple of screenshots here. Let's see how high in the list Spotify is. You can use the stock stats or, even better, some app like Gsam.

I'll let you know if I find something. Good luck.

Re: Media server killing battery (sorry, another thread)

I had the same problem and resolved it by uninstalling all media type apps with dlna such as mediahouse and others. Not sure which one was to blame.

I still kept the plex client

Hope this helps
