This is Ravpower's version of a wireless hard drive. Well ok, not really a hard drive because it doesn't come with any storage, but this is actually a reader for your media storage such as your SD cards, USB thumb drives, and external hard drives. This has been a great supplement to my portable HDD which is filled with my shows and movies.
I don't know about everyone else but I like to have all my entertainment all on my portable hard drive instead of separating my library. With this WifiDisk, I have been able to keep all my entertainment in one place and stream it wirelessly on my nexus 7. I wish I found this sooner when I had to go to Germany.
I'm a noob when it comes to networking but using this was actually pretty easy. When you first turn it on, all you have to do is search for the WiFi Disks network in your wifi settings and log into it with the pw 11111111. Once you're in, I took the advice of one of the Amazon reviews and connected my device to the wifi disk through the web browser. I typed in 10.10.10.254 (wifi disk's ip address) into the browser address bar and a green user interface comes up. It asks you to login and the user name is "admin" all lower case letters with no pw. After going through the wizard setup, I was also able to connect to my home network too through my home router, which is another plus to this device. However, this device does not carry any data plans or internet of any sort so you will have to connect this to an actual wifi network that carries internet. Without internet this becomes your personal network for what ever data the wifi disk is reading at just about anywhere you are located as long as you have your tablet/phone and this wifi disk with you.
Another great thing about this device is that I can share my content with friends. Description says up to 5 people but I have not yet tried to exceed that.
There are a few things I dislike. It gives me maybe 4-5 hours. This also claims it can charge your phone or devices too since it has a USB port, but I feel you can't really get the full benefits of both uses since the battery is only 3000 mah. And secondly, it does not let me edit my files using the wifi disk. I am only able to transfer the file onto my tablet, edit it while the file is locally on the tablet and them move it back to my hd through this.
Range for this is alright. It's nothing compared to your home router, but it's more than enough than what a wire can provide and without the hassle. A good guess would be 14 feet.
Overall, this is a great product and I can see myself using this a lot for whenever I want to view my media on my tablet.
