I have been reading these forums for a few days preparing for my new Verizon Fascinate to get here. I understand that we do not have 2.2 yet.

I want to root it so that I can use wifi tethering. Can it still be rooted after this newest update that is being pushed to our phones? How can I force the update before rooting? Which method of rooting works best after the new update?

Can somebody list steps and hold my hand through the steps? I am no dummy, I have been hacking/cracking for years. Just need a bit of guidance since this is my first Android phone.

here is the thread on how to root http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/54659-how-rooting-your-fascinate.html it is worth it did the same for the wireless tether make sure u get the dl09 update before rooting since the root in that thread is for dl09 there are also alot of roms and all but i am not sure on the roms myself yet but other members have done them and i am sure they can help you with that. and to update your phone go to settings>about phone>systems updates>check new

awesome. Installed the samsung drivers and downloaded the fascinate one click 02. looks pretty straight forward. Now I need to look into the wifi tethering.

Also, where do I get titanium backup? Android market?

In theory, any new Fascinates should be shipping with DL09 already installed. When you get it you can check by going to Settings > About phone and reading the last 4 characters of the Baseband version and Build number. They're either going to be DL09, DI01, or for some crazy reason DH12. In any case, if you don't have the update already, one of the first things you'll see when you boot the phone and activate it is the upgrade screen which will download and install DL09. From there it's all a matter of what you want to do with it. Many people don't like the extra apps that Verizon includes on their phones like VCast, VZ Navigator, Bing, etc. and want to remove them. Thus, you would need to root your phone and install an advanced file explorer like Root Explorer from the market. In lieu of being too overwhelming with everything you can do in this post, I'd recommend reading through the forums and checking out what other mods people are doing. You won't really have a full grasp on what you want to change until you see the phone in it's original form first. From there, it's all up to you.

yes both are in the market once rooted you can get them and use them. i also say use appbrain since you can manage all your apps online and back them up so you can download them again. super manager is a good root tool to debloat all are vzw software that you dont want that you can find here http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/34208-apps-safe-remove-once-rooted.html and dont worry about bricking your phone there are plenty of people here that have bricked it. i did it once and just flashed the stock software and was good to go

Yes, I have been reading up. I do know that I don't want anything to do with Bing. I have used Google search faithfully and I like it. I hate Bing, lol. So that will be another thing I will be looking into.

So my list so far is:
Root
wifi tether
disable bing, install google

this phone is great so far especially after the dl09 update came down because the gps is spot on and instant now. i cant put it down and the gf is always yelling at me. i rooted about a month after i got it . gonna do a lil more research on the whole ROM thing before i do but its looking like i will do it soon

OK, am rooted, installed wifi tether and am now trying to figure out the remove bing/install google part of it. Maybe I'll get a fresh start tomorrow

There is alot to learn on these little devices. I'm not happy with my home screen. I need to do some more reading.

use launcher pro

lol, too late. But it isn't so bad for me, as it is what I started on. I have no idea what any previous versions were like.

i use the android 2.3 launcher that's supposedly straight from a nexus s with modifications to have compatibility with other phones but i'm not really sure on the accuracy of that. on the plus though, i love it because it's been really fast and reliable. snappier and cleaner looking than the touchwiz interface samsung uses in my opinion
