Having been a Galaxy S owner for 2 years now, i thought i'd post the best apps I have found that have worked for me,all available from Google Play the newest one being the first (I have no affilation whatsoever with any developer) I am using a Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate from Verizon running version 2.3.5:

1."HOLO" Launcher- this app just came out and is still in the beginning stages, but it is awesome, it's small 850 kb, as fast as Launcher Pro, clean, pre-skinned with ICS, has 3 dock screens with more icons available than any launcher up to 7 per row of 3 or 21 icons ( I currently have 6 per row of 3 (18) is what I uese and they still come out nice and big INCLUDING folders, which makes my homescreens nice and empty and uncluttered). It supports scrollable widgets, has a nice dark menu screen with shortcuts to manage apps, lock desktop & edit screens. Also has gesture swipes up or down.( I bring down status bar on the down swipe & I use it to access Android assistant on the up-swipe.) It is smoothe and quick and low memory use.

2. New app "PEEK" email - this is also small at 533 kb, but does most of everything (except emojis at the moment)it has all the box headers up top of the screen, inbox, contacts, sent mail, outbox, drafts, saved emails,& trash all in dark grey and easy to see. It is very simple to use and set up and works as it should.

3. "MAKE YOUR OWN CLOCK" app by Tomas hubalek is amazing if you like to design your own clocks like I do. There are free and paid versions It has 1000's of designs by others as well as a design editor to design your own, and doesn't suck battery at all. The paid version is 2.5 MB & includes weather forecasts, weather icons, tap to open app feature ( i use my calendar straight form the clock) set alarm, battery level, current temp, location and phone memory levels. Warning : it becomes addictive !

4." NOTIFICATION TOGGLE" is 196 kb small and allows you to add shortcuts and toggles in a panel that goes on the status bar and where you can acces the apps directly from the icons. Very handy when you're in another app. and you need to access things like phone, contacts, text, recorder, airplane mode, etc. It also has built in a Blue or White Battery digits percent for Status Bar at the top to match theme !!!

5."ASSISTANT" androids answer to SIRI, but better. At 2 MB, It's fun and easy to use with a modifiable avatar (male or female, white or dark skinned, asian eyes, different hairstyles and clothes, and uses both U.S .and U.K. accents for even more fun ! It smiles when it opens and greets you ! Better than a stoopid microphone icon any day.

6. "SHAKE CALL" 204 kb -is a must have if you have touch controls only as on some Galaxy S models - it can be programmed for intensity of shake, and opens and ends call without opening the lock screen - i have found it stable and invaluable when driving !

6. "ONE TOUCH OPTIMIZE " 1.4 MB - is a simple 2 in 1 task killer and cache cleaner combined, which saves memory and is simple to use. It has a one-touch widget for the screen, and just one touch cleans the apps and cache both at the same time.(can also be set to automatice cleaning) It also has a information screen for cpu,sd card, ram and rom usage, I use it in conjunction with:

7."FAST REBOOT" 19 kb - works diffrently than usual task killers by quickly ending and restarting processes and apps without noticeable effect but releases a lot of ram. Sweet.

8."QUIK SYNC SETTINGS" 23kb -is a widget that is a simple shortcut to the Data Sync menu to turn it on and off. I keep mine off until i need it to save battery at night.

9. "ADDONS DETECTOR" 477 kb - checks all your apps for air push ads and other stuff you might not like. Nothing worse than adds appearing in your status bar and no way of finding out which one's doing it. You can find it with this and DELETE it!

10. "SKYFIRE" 1.6 MB - is the best browser for movies/videos and plays stuff others don't, is fast, feature rich and stable.

11."JUICE DEFENDER" 1.5 MB - really does work for my Fascinate in saving battery - no doubt in my mind. Still a great App for prolonging battery use, IMHO.

I hope this gives you some alternatives to try, versus the memory hogs and old bloated stuff that starts to get laggy and takes up more and more memory. I have found these to be very effective and useful.

p.s. If i turn wi-fi, gps, and auto rotation and background data off at night with Juice defender running, I can go to bed at 11pm with a 100% battery and wake up 8 hours later STILL WITH 100%
