My boyfriend recently passed and his phone has been taken by his ex. It has all of our texts etc and I paid for it and want it back. She's refusing to return it so I want to brick it. I also need to know can I cancel a line on Verizon without it in my possession?

I'm sorry to hear it and condolences for your loss...

1- who's the account admin on the Verizon account?
2- is the phone on payment installments? If so how many left?
3- do you have his sign on email used on phone along with password?

I am the admin. I might have his email, we created a new one. He wasn't very techy. And I'm not sure how many payments left

You can cancel single line but the device remaining balance will need to be paid or charged to you next bill after cancelation..

Is that phone being used? I know you said Ex has it but do you know if it was security pin locked? I'm thinking with login to Google account if you know password you can remotely disable...

I would be getting in touch with the police for theft charges. That may be the quickest way to get it back, so long as you can prove ownership.

She figured out his password to login to the phone.

I'd recommend same since you are admin on account.. And prove you're making the payments..

Meantime call Verizon to either cancel or suspend line..

I think I would try to leave it intact for now. If she cancels the line, it'll tip off the ex that something is going down and she may toss the phone or make it unrecoverable. I would talk to the police first and see what they say. She may be able to then use the report to convince Verizon to let her get a credit on the line access charges during the theft period.

I'm inclined to agree with calling the police. I almost want to say inform Verizon so they at least know the use is technically fraudulent? So that at least she can't rack up some kind of phone bill out of spite.
