my phone has deleted apps and settings

hi
i have a brand new android phone and all was well until today. i plugged it in to charge and went out. an hour later when i picked up the phone it had a large green android thing with the word 'erasing' underneath. then it seemed to reset itself. now i have lost all apps and settings. these include online banking apps etc. i had avg security installed too. now my phone is exactly the same as the day it arrived. does anybody know what has happened? and if my info and details are safe?

Presumably no-one could have done it maliciously while you were out?
