My phone will turn off ("battery empty") but when plugged in, will charge at the % it turned off at

I have a Sony Z5 compact (ca. 24 months old) which works perfectly, apart from the fact that I need to put my phone on speaker in order to take a call. However, since about a month, the phone will automatically switch off (initially at 30 percent, now often at 60 percent). This often happens when using apps such as Snapchat. Is it perhaps just the battery that needs replacing or is it perhaps something more serious?

Thanks in advance!

It could be the battery failing. It's hard to say really. Try it in safe mode to rule out any rogue apps. After that try a factory reset after backing up your data.

Sounds like a dendrite (see Lithium Battery Dendrite links if you're interested). It does mean that you need a new battery, though. (And even if the battery is brand new, dendrites aren't usually covered under warranty.)
