Sometimes it works fine for a few days, then back to overheating after I start reading a book for about 20 seconds. Shuts down and won't come back up.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you using an SD card? A corrupt file on the card can cause overheating, as the system tries to scan the file over and over again. Unmount the card (in Settings>Storage), remove it, and insert it into your computer's reader. The best way to fix it is to turn it off, take the back off, unplug the battery for a few minutes, plug it back in, and restart the device. I was going to buy a new battery, watched a YouTube video on how to do it. I practiced by unplugging the battery before I bought a new one. After my practice run, my Note 8 has worked great with no battery issues. I plan to do that occasionally just for maintenance! Saved me from buying a battery!
