Here is my first attempt at a case modification for my Thunderbolt with an extended battery. I went to a local VZW Authorized reseller and purchased a no-name Jel-case. These are more ridged than the silicone cases and hold their shape when cut. I used a flame to smooth the cuts and burrs. I did this for my DINC, but that was easier, since it has the pushouts to cut against.

Not bad, I like how you think. The case protects everything except the extended battery door but then again, you can pop the regular battery back in if you ever want to sell it.

Basically everything is protected except for the extended battery hump itself.

That does look good indeed i ordered 2 epik cases and will be modding one of them to fit the ext. bat.

Thanks for the visual aids!

That's very impressive! Great job :)

This is quite impressive! Did you go by dimensions or just eyeball it and pretty it up with flames? I'm just wondering because I only have a kinfie and a ruler at my disposal currently (the poor life of a college student ;]) and got the extended battery and a body glove case this morning. It would be nice to have a jury rig job look as nice as possible (why I prefer working with metal over any other material).

No ruler, just eyeballed it short, trimmed to fit and then used a flame to smooth the cuts. I am VERY pleased wit the way it turned out. I just used a very sharp blade, was pretty easy.

Nice work. The rest of the case holds its shape in front with all that material removed?

Very nice! Needing to mod a case for the extended battery had been holding me back on getting one. This is making me reconsider...

Yes, it holds its shape perfectly! That is why I went with the more firm Gel case, it is rigid and holds its shape even after the cut. I did this on my Dinc too. I am very please with the results and LOVE the extended battery run time!

Good job! So hows the battery life now?

Awesome. I did the same and it looks great. Extended battery... It's better than my DINC was with the Seidio 3500mAh by a large margin. The phone is not that large (looks worse than it is) and you can easily get into the second day even with pretty serious usage. 4G sucks power but with my email going (not surfing), several accounts, it beats the Dinc by a good margin.

Took my phone off the charger at 7:30am and now, at 11:48pm it is at 40% , almost 16hours with moderate use (FB, Foursquare, Twitter, surfing, youtube, email (1 exchange and 3 gmail) and screen at 26% , in one word, AWESOME!

Could you explain the 'flame' a bit? I assume this is to smooth out the cut edges but what exactly did you use?
