My thoughts on Note 8's early success.

Besides it being Samsung's latest & greatest smartphone I think there are other factors in the high sales numbers so far with the Note 8.

The Note 7 debacle really worked out opposite what critics were expecting with all those "Will this kill the Note line" headlines. Note fans want a Note and many held out without upgrading when they usually would have or, did with the Note 7 and got burnt. (pun intended) All these people who would probably by happily using their Note 7 until the full term of their plans. Until they were able to upgrade to the Note8 from a carrier with a contract or payment plan. That leaves so many people sitting on Note5's 4's and S8's ready to upgrade to the next Note phone. This is why I think pre-orders and launch-day purchases have been off the charts with the Note 8. It's more of a testament to people not having a new phone for a long time because they didn't get to keep their Note 7 or simply were not able to buy one when their plan ended. Rather than the Note being an incredible device, and I'm not saying it isn't incredible but it's not without it's criticisms and its these criticisms that might have lowered sales if people were able to own a Note 7.

I am definitely in that boat. I was using a Note4 and was so ready to upgrade to Note 7 but didn't because of the battery fiasco. I knew Samsung would come back much stronger with Note 8 so I preordered on the very first day and I was not disapointed. The Note 8 is the best phone I ever owned.

I'm in the needed a Note now boat. I traded my N5 for the N7. Instead of buying a used N5 outright, I chose to go the S7E route. So it's been a whole year without a note when I'd had one for the 3 years prior.

I was also going through withdrawals from not having my Note. I used an iPhone 7 Plus for a year until the new Note was released. The iPhone was really nice and reliable and a decent holdover until the new Note was released. I also believe that many people were disappointed in the Apple offerings this year. Samsung may have released the hands down best smartphone of the year.

I wanted a note 7 but starting reading about the fragile screen, then the other issue.

I never thought for a second that the note line would end over that one issue.

After the N8 debacle, I knew that Samsung couldn't afford another with the N8. They stepped up their testing and quality control on the N8, so much, in fact, that I can't recall any Samsung phone released previously that has had so few new phone complaints. Normally, I wait a few months on any newly released phone to be sure the early manufacturing bugs get resolved. However, I pre-ordered my N8, trusting that Samsung had learned a lesson last year and had to produce a faultlessly made phone this year. So far, I have not been disappointed.

Another Note 4 upgrader, I had the N7, it was an awesome phone, and only because AT&T threatened to turn it into a brick basically did I turn it in. First day of preorder I ordered the 8. Still upset with the lack of color choice, and I'm also not happy that I wasn't offered the deal to upgrade.....No, I didn't go to the 5 only because of the battery, but I gave that up and was ready to move on, not my fault they issued bombs

I have always loved the Note devices, I tend to agree with the OP's thoughts.
For me it was:

-Note Edge, (Missed s-pen)
-Note 7,

-S8+ (using external stylus),
-Note 8...

The Note is a great device. People who want a Note, want a Note. But those who want a top end, the Note is at the top of the list.

A lot of people know they can upgrade early, not wait 2 years. T-Mobile advertises it.

With most saying the S8+ is a Note 8 without an Spen, you'd think the preorders would have been down, but it wasn't. Preorders weren't up because there wasn't a Note 7, there are a lot of options, and less expensive options.

Which stylus were you using on the s8? I was considering the V30 but would miss the SPen too much.
