I just posted my first video, wherein I barely even touch Android as an OS. Instead, I'm defending the hardware!

http://www.windowscentral.com/reviews/smartphones/wmexperts_on_the_g1_smartphone.html

so questions:

- Ringtones? How? Especially chimes for alerts, I'd like to change those
- Battery saving tips?
- What's your favorite music player
- Something about how iTunes does my music is adding all of my album art to the pictures album. Very annoying, any ideas?
- Since I'm unlocked and on AT&T, IM doesn't seem to work. What's your favorite im client from the app store? Anything out yet that will alert me via sms?
- Favorite tweaks?
- Favorite game?

- try ringdroid, its an app on the market that allow you to cut your music into ringtones
-to save power, turn off your gmail sync and use the email app to control how often you want to check your email... also try deep cycling of your battery to get more out of it
-the native music player is alright, and I will recommend "cinema" for video

-my g1 is unlock and using a telco in Singapore (non-t-mobile) and the native IM client works for me.. not sure why it doesn't for you... possibly an APN settings issue? other good app including BuddyMob which you can find other G1 users and also log on to IM
- try Droidsan Tweak Tool... if you are using RC29 and below, you can get auto rotation. if you are RC30 like you, you can control your transition and fade in/out effects
-my favorite game at the moment is Spira Defence

hope this helps! =)

I wondered what new you could say about the G1 at this point and was pleasantly surprised with the video. Good job of expanding the discussion. I had missed the relation of the chin to the trackball but it makes sense. I don't agree with the use of the term "plasticky" which denotes cheapness but I get the point. However, "a Sidekick for grownups?" What does THAT mean?

On to your questions:

Ringtones - I use Ringdroid to make my own ringtones.

Battery - I use Power Manager to create custom profiles for common situations: indoors (wi-fi on, gps off), outdoors (gps on, wi-fi off), battery low (everything off), etc. When away from power sources I carry a spare battery. Finally, I put the G1 into "Airplane Mode" when not in use.

Music player - The stock Music player works for me but then I don't listen to much music on the G1. I notice that most music fans mention TuneWiki.

iTunes - Describe how are you transferring the songs so we can avoid it! ;) I've converted a few iTunes tracks to mp3 and put them on the G1 and the cover art goes into the Music player as expected.

IM - I don't do much messaging nor do we have AT&T coverage, but I hear good things about Hello AIM.

Tweaks - I use AnyCut to organize the 3 sections of the Home Screen into frequently used contacts/shortcuts, main apps, and mapping/navigation apps. Other than that I weed through apps I don't use at least once a week to conserve memory. Anticipating the day when apps can be stored on the card.

Games - I like puzzles such as Coloroid, Smart Tac Toe and Sudoku which are relaxing and yet challenging. I'm waiting for some classic games such backgammon, cribbage and dominoes (the one backgammon game available is poor IMO). Sorry, not into action games.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your G1 time and I look forward to more of your insights, oh great master of mobile devices!

I am using Salling media sync to sync my itunes stuffs onto the G1.. the picture thing does not bother me as I can choose photos from "Camera" and my song albums so i didnt have that problem

Merry Christmas!

Hope you all are having a great holidays! We had a nice xc-ski on a very white xmas.

awfully quiet here

I trust the Android OS and Cupcake are developing faster than Android Central! With over a million G1's sold in 2008 and the "G2" scheduled for April we should have more discussion.

agree...

cupcake is rumoured to be out in UK on Friday. I hope it will come quickly for US G1s....

Palm shoots!... THEY SCORE!!

With Dieter at CES reporting on the Palm presentation--what a traitor! ;) --we might as well throw that into the Round Robin discussion.

Should Android folks be worried about the new Palm webOS and "Pre" smartphone? It looks great and Palm should be proud but the work has just begun. By the time the phone actually reaches customers by mid-2009 Android should be in at least its third version and with a more mature, paid app store. Several Android phones on different carriers are likely as well.

The exclusive carrier for the new Palm is, unfortunately, Sprint which has the worst customer satisfaction rating in the industry and has been losing accounts in droves for over a year. So, we have two companies in poor condition depending on one another. Not the best scenario but it could work in this messed-up economy. We'll see.

Thanks all!

Hats off to all the smartphone experts and their sponsors for the contest! May the most deserving geek win!

Shhhhhhh... quiet, you might wake somebody up! ;)

I guess the experts are still gathering themselves from the gadget shows and the Pre unveiling, so be patient.

Android is slowly making itself known. I'm sure forum traffic will pick up as more phones and carriers are offered.

Haven't heard of the G1 name in a while.
The good days.
