MyTouch 4G Video Compared to iPhone 3GS

I have a MyTouch 4G and was playing with an iPhone 3Gs today that I have purchased for a friend just to compare them. I am on T-Mobile and my 4G has access to my WiFi network as well as it's own data network. The iPhone doesn't have a SIM card installed so it was just working off of my WiFi network.

I had them both set to start the same Youtube video and selected it at exactly the same time. The iPhone started a hair sooner but not by much. The iPhone's video however looked much much better, and larger. I went into the Youtube settings and selected the higher res option so now it shows the same picture quality but takes far longer to start the video.

Was the 4G video quality worse because it was using the network rather than my Wifi? If so, is there a way to make it use WiFi when a signal is available but revert back to the network when not in WiFi range?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning more about these phones!

Connect your phone to WiFi for the first time, then under WiFi settings click the menu physical button and select advanced. First option is WiFI sleep policy: set it to Never. Next option is Best WiFi performance, make sure it's checked. Now your phone will use the WiFi when it's connected, and when you leave the area it will switch to Mobile Network. One drawback is that if you are on a call on WiFi and you leave the area, the call will drop. It does not have a call hand-over like BlackBerry's have.

Also. Hi-quality youtube will look better on the 3GS because the screen is lower resolution.

Mutouch 4G Youtube performance

I changed the settings per danperde's post (thanks!). Unfortunately that didn't make any difference. Head-to-head with a 3GS is still starts about the same time but looks like hell compared to the clear video the 3Gs is showing. When I say "hell" I mean much much worse not just a little worse.

Again, when I change the Youtube setting to "always default to high quality video" then the pictures are both clear and both fill the screen but when it's set to this setting the video takes much longer to load.

I'm no techie by any means but why would Youtube look better on a 3GS because of a lower quality resolution? Has anyone else tried a 3GS vs MT4G Youtube comparison? I'd love to know if it's just me.

You're taking the same quality video and trying to fill more pixels with it. So what might be one pixel on the 3GS will take two (or whatever the math works out to) so sharpness takes a hit.

High quality looks awesome IMHO on the MT4G. But yes it'll take longer to load and might buffer too.
