N00B question...

i have checked this forum and wasnt able to find what i was looking for so I figured I would just ask... is there are "ROOTING and FLASHING for DUMMIES" post anywhere?
I was able to do the TEMP root and run the CLEAN TOOL with no problem, but that was totally scripted and had very easy instructions to follow.
This whole- unlock the bootloader- back up the files -fast boot recovery- flash the rom/kernel/whatever has me more than slightly confused and the LAST thing i want to do is BRICK my phone.

I can follow simple directions, but thus far i havent really seen any that make sense because I dont know how to do it, or in some cases even what they are talking about.

I'm not looking for anyone to re-invent the wheel, if someone could just point me in the right direction, i would greatly appreciate it.

Check this thread out, it has links to step by step instructions on how to unlock and root your phone. Its really not that hard, but I know the terminology is a bit confusing to someone new to Android.

In addition to the guides, ask questions. There are plenty of us around that will gladly answer no matter how "dumb" you think the question may be.

what i am confused on is do you have to unlock to root it.. or not.. and i downloaded the newest update there no way i can unlock, root,flash rom right

Yes you have to unlock before you can root.

If you downloaded the newest OTA I'm pretty sure you can still unlock but I'm not sure about it being rooted unless you were rooted before the OTA.

Unlock was required for permanent root. Prior to the OTA one could gain a temporary root access which would be removed when the phone was rebooted.

Unlocking the phone also changes the terms of the manufacturer warranty, basically if anything you do while rooted causes a hardware failure, IE overclocking frying the processor, then you're SOL.
