N5 has broken gyroscope/accelerometer - any solution?

A few weeks back I noticed that my N5 would sometimes rotate on its own. It would be laying flat on a table and suddenly the screen would rotate. Then it started *not* rotating when I expected it to. (Yes, I know the difference between the auto-rotate and portrait settings.)

I eventually downloaded a free app to check the sensors (Sensor Kinetics). The charts would show zigzags all over the place when trying to rotate (or I think even when not rotating). I read somewhere that sometimes a slight whack on the side can sometimes get them back in shape again. I would give my N5 a thwack on the left side and then all the data in the charts would be fine, straight lines, and I could rotate and see the straight lines change accordingly.

Eventually though they'd stop working again and tapping on the side stopped doing any good (and I suppose I may have made it worse by doing that?). Occasionally the Sensor Kinetics app would indicate that the three main sensors aren't available (or whatever language it uses). And sometimes Photosphere/Panoramic are not options in Camera, which happens when the sensors are not available. Restarting the phone usually makes them "available" again, although they don't seem to produce any data out of them. i.e. Panorama is an option, but trying it just produces a mainly white screen as it's trying to get a fix on things before letting me take the initial image. Sensor Kinetics shows no data in the charts for those sensors. I can *sometimes* get Chrome to rotate, but then it rotates the wrong direction.

Are those sensors completely dead now (or near dead)? Are there other things I can try to get them working again? If not, are there any other solutions? Yes, I have done the figure-8 calibration thing, which I think may have worked once or twice, but now seems to do nothing.

One annoyance is that I sometimes use the Camera Zoom app instead of the main Camera app and Camera Zoom is stuck in landscape orientation (even if global settings are on Portrait). So if I snap a portrait photo in Camara Zoom, I have to go through the clunky steps of rotating it. (Likewise, I have to rotate Camera app pics that I want to be landscape, but that process is a bit easier.)

Not being able to take Photospheres will be really annoying. I've had this N5 since launch in fall 2013 and it has served me well. I guess I'll have to deal with a crippled phone until the hopeful N5 (2015) launch?
