Nandroid issue

Anyone know why I would be missing apps after restoring a nandroid?

Its been happening the last few weeks, and yes I know for a fact the missing apps were there when I nandroided (ie titanium backup) which I never go without.

If it matters I believe the apps that end up missing after restoring a nandroid were on my sd card.

I think what happens is that when you perform a nandroid, it is only backing up the NAND memory on the phone. Because of that, it isn't backing up any parts of apps that you have moved to the SD card. If you make a Nandroid and flash a new ROM, I believe the new ROM wipes out the SD card app folder (I'm not sure of the name) and when you restore the previous Nandroid, if the phone can't find the entire app, it assumes it is corrupt and ignores or deletes it.

It makes wonder then since there is an option inside of RA to back up the .SD extensions as part of the nandroid. Were you going from a Sense based ROM to an AOSP or vice versa?

The option in Amon_RA for the sd-ext backup isn't for apps moved to the SD card from the standard applications part of the settings menu, it is to back up the sd-ext partition that is only used with a2sd. If you haven't partitioned your SD card for this purpose and moved your apps there using a2sd, then nothing will happen if you try to back it up.

OOOOOOHHHH, dude.....I couldn't tell you how long I thought that's what it's for. Thank you for clearing that up for me as I always wondered why that file was empty.

That's when I started looking further into it, since the older versions of Amon_RA would fail during a Nandroid if sd-ext was selected and not available.

That honestly sounds like a pretty handy feature, if you knew about it before you went to make the backup of course. Do you know if the latest RA does that as well?

According to the changelog, the latest version (2.3) will still make a backup if you checked the box for sd-ext and you don't have it, rather than failing with an error message.

Nandroid will skip sd-ext backup when it's not present.

Cool deal, I suppose it was freaking people out. Making them think their recovery was broken.
