Native SIP Support :)

Ok, not sure how I missed this one for ICS features, but the native SIP support in ICS is GREAT! Configured up an extension on my Asterisk box, forwarded some of the ports across on my firewall (remapped them to avoid voip hackers) and reconfigured Asterisk to accept external extensions, and it works I can both make and receive calls SIP with the Nexus. VERY cool...

I tried using a SIP account, but found that Verizon was charging me per minute for the VOIP calls even though it was using wifi. Are you sure that you're not getting hit with a per minute charge too? I stayed with the default 5060 port for the SIP account, so Verizon might just be monitoring that port and charging accordingly. I can try to change that, but wondered what other people used to avoid getting double charged for VOIP calls.

Just a follow up on my response. I called Verizon this morning to see what the deal was with them charging me for VOIP / SIP calls. Yesterday I experimented with using my SIP account on the phone, but found the calls logged on my verizon's minute usage list. When I was on the phone with tech support, I logged back into my account and found the per minute charges were gone! They explained that they might temporarily be logged in my account, but that they shouldn't actually charge me for VOIP usage. It's really great news as this is going to be an outstanding phone for home / work combined with a Trixbox / Asterisk account. I'm extremely happy and surprised that Verizon isn't trying to charge on these VOIP calls. I'll keep an eye on my billing just in case that changes in the future, though.

I haven't found a concise explanation of what is possible with SIP technology. Does that mean you can use your home network to make/receive calls over IP from/to your Verizon number? Or is it just a separate VoIP?

Scenario 1:

Let's say at the office, I have extension 8105, and it's SIP enabled (and I have all the credentials required). If I put that into the SIP account area of the phone app, I should be able to make calls through my office phone system and receive calls destined for x8105 there as well. 1 phone, 2 numbers. I should also be able to make 4 digit extension calls to other phones in the office right on the phone.

Scenario 2:

Let's say I have a Vonage or Broadvoice SIP account. I get way better rates making calls through Broadvoice vs. my cellular account when I call overseas. So I register my Broadvoice SIP account in my GNex. I can now use my GNex to place US calls over Verizon but make all International calls over SIP (e.g. your International calls are all VoIP, your regular domestic calls are over CDMA).

Caveats:

1. This works reliably only on solid Internet connections (latency of 120ms or less) on Wi-Fi
2. It does work over 4G although you are technically in violation of VZW terms of use by doing this
3. I don't believe the really aggressive codecs are on the GNex which make 3G calls choppy at best

This is available native in both Gingerbread and ICS, but all carriers typically remove this, because it cuts directly into a key revenue stream. They really want to discourage this kind of ultilization.
