I need to find a good car charger for my nexus 4. I would also like one that will safely work with android tablets. I do t know if any brand name charger would be ok, but I really don't want to damage anyone I plug it into. I was considering this one:

But since its a Motorola brand charger, I didn't know if it would work with any android phone or tablet.

I tried using my car charger I bought from AT&T for my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket. Bad idea. It charged up the Nexus 4 from 25% to 75% very quick but then when I unplugged and started using it crashed very fast! So don't use any car charger. At this point I doubt Google will make one.

My gf uses a USB plugin and just attaches the cord that came with the phone. It hasn't caused any problems yet.

Same, I have a USB-to-car adapter that I plug my normal charger into and it works just fine.

Monoprice.com has a 2.1 amp one for a few bucks which will work with phone and tablet.

I have that one in my truck. I actually have a few of them as we got several in from a customer who sent in some old phones for recycling. They work great and do output 1 amp.
It will work great for your Nexus 4 but most tablets want 2amp chargers. So it will charge a tablet thats off but very slowly.
If your tablet is on and your using it it might hold the current battery percentage but probably wont charge any.
Keep in mind phones use 1 amp chargers and tablets use 2 amp.

I thought phones needed a 2 amp charger as well.
I'm more than likely only going to use that charger with my phone

I question that any unofficial car charger is okay for the Nexus 4. If it charges it up too fast it's just going to drain that quick too and damage your battery over time.

I didn't hear it anywhere, it happened to me last week. I tried to use a car charger from my last phone and it did just that.

Were you traveling in low/no coverage? I use various car chargers all the time and have never had a problem with "charging too fast" and "battery draining just as fast." The most common issue I had with a charger not working was with my GNex having a loose USB port. Tried those same cables and chargers (they seemed to no longer work) with my N4 and they work fine with no ill effects. I use a 20 Watt dual USB car charger as my main travel charger (2.1 amps 5 volts per USB port) that is meant for charging two tablets without problem with my N4 and N7.

To the OP the Ventev black dual USB car charger in the Shop Android store works magic and is fairly priced if you need to charge more than one device quick or two tablets.

No all conditions were normal. It charged up about 50% worth of battery in about 30 minutes and then drained that fast too. I just won't charge it in the car ever. Maybe that's what caused the battery to rapidly drain and I had to do a master reset.

I have that charger, it's a keeper. Charges my Amaze up around 700mA.

The two worst things that affect LiIon and LiPoly battery's are excessive heat and extreme low voltage. Sometimes they cant even recover from to low of a voltage. Its bad to let it go completely dead. The phone shuts off when the voltage/current get to low to protect the battery. If its not charged for a long time the battery will continue to self discharge and the protection circuit kicks in and the battery is completely non usable until voltage can be increased.

Phones and tablets have protective circuits built in and software to monitor the amount of voltage and current going into them.
Phones are designed to cut off around 1 Amp and tablets around 2 Amps.. Obviously every phone is different but these are the averages.

Years ago when we had flip phones, like the razr, those were 500 mAh. then the first smart phones were around 750 mAh. Now the standard is 1 Amp.
So when buying a home / car charger look to see what the output current is. If its 1.5amp then your fine, you wont utilize all of it. If you plug in a tablet then it will take all of it and want more.

The PROBLEM most people run into is cheap build quality. Unregulated DC power can fluctuate. The cig plug in your car is 12 volts, but the phone needs 5 volts. Theres a step down process. If the charger is made cheaply it doesnt regulate the voltage well when higher current draw is required and this can impact charging.

Why put a 2 dollar charger on a 500 dollar phone. Why risk it. Spend 10, 15, 20, 30 bucks on a good high quality charger that will work when its supposed to.

I just bought a rocket fish USB from BBMobile it typically cost about $20 but I got it for $2. It charges my phone quite fast.. I had a moto cord before hand

Personally I've found Googles whole approach to accessories for this phone (and their tablets) to be wholly lacking. It beggars belief that they did not know they were onto a winner with a phone that matched or beat the specs of the best phones out there at almost half the price. The availability of official accessories is woeful and whoever was in charge of that side of the business needs a right good slapping.

I go onto their own website to look for a car charger - they don't have one. I look for their wireless charger - not available in your country (the UK or the rest of Europe). Do they want to sell these things or not?

Seriously, the lack of information on what kind of car charger is suitable for a Nexus 4 and 7, the complete lack of availability of official accessories and the lack of information on if or when this is likely to change really pisses me off. C'mon Google, these are the actions of business amateurs. That mob whose company is named after a fruit makes a huge chunk of their profit from official accessories, the type of useful things people want and need. Get a grip.
