My used Nexus 6 I bought a while ago is finally caving in and slowly dying. I've been having lots of issues with it so it's about time I upgrade. I haven't been keeping up with all of the phones and their features so I'm a bit out of the loop. I wanted to get some insight and recommendations on what phone I should upgrade to. Here are my main requirements:
-$500 budget
-headphone jack (i like to listen to music and use phones so I do not want a phone without a jack. I hate bluetooth)
-would also prefer something that receives fast updates, if not then i guess it's not the end of the world(used to google devices)

I don't want to go over $500 budget but one thing I might consider is the Google payment plan for the Pixel 2 XL if it's really worth it but then it doesn't have a headphone jack either.

I would recommend the Moto g5 plus. the cons with that are low speaker volume, fewer updates, and poor daylight visibility.

Or you can look into the Nokia devices that are recent, they have all been given great reviews for their respective hardware ranges and achieved a reputation of timely updates.
lastly, if you have an Amazon Prime membership and dont mind lock screen ads that are unobtrusive, LG offers the G6 and G6+ on the website. Updates seem to be their only Achilles heel but considering what you get, you might consider that an adequate trade off.

One thing that I've been doing is not using my headphone jack on my G6. I bought a dongle from Google and have been using that whenever I use wired head phones. I have to say the audio quality is much better. Plus i think the headphone jack is slowly going away. So for me, it's a test to see if i can live without it. I realize that the Nexus 6 has micro USB charging. If you're used to using stock Android, I'd look at the OnePlus devices or Pixel 2.

What if you got a pixel xl first gen? Since you don’t seem to mind used, you can get them at a great deal plus headphone jack plus great camera and timely updates

A first generation Pixel device is also a good idea!

OnePlus 5T
LG G6 - one of my favorite phones of all time

I want to say the HTC 10 but that phone is old and pretty dated now.

Samsung Galaxy S7

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Heard that the Moto G devices are great too.

Blackberry Motion. Great battery life, headphone jack, around your price point, monthly updates, stock Google.

If you haven't found a phone yet, look at the Motorola Moto X. The "One" version should have good updates, and it seems to fit the rest of your criteria as well. Nokia also seems to be doing well.

- HTC U11
- LG V20
- Huawei Mate9
- 1st gen Google Pixel XL

Lol, from a Nexus 6 to a BlackBerry Motion would be quite the step backwards I imagine, with its puny 5.5inch 1080P Display and mid range CPU.

Depends. I do not have a Nx6 but reviews pan the battery life. Although it's "water proof/resistant" -- I need both battery + water whatever. I'm giving the Motion a try. It will live a lot inside my motorcycle jacket, rain or shine.

I am going off the fact that OP seems to want a Phable, he has a Nexus 6 and looking at the Pixel 2 XL as the last resort if he is happy with the payment plan on it, both phones have large 6inch QHD displays and powerful CPUs.
