need help with gingerbread on lg optimus s

I see videos on youtube where people have put 2.3 on sprints lg optimus s. i have this phone and while it is great i would like more memory and battery plus im interested in overclocking to maybe 800mhz. can anyone (who im sure is smarter than me in these matters) break it down (gingerbread for dummies style) and tell me what i need to take as my next steps to get this done safely. I know the update should be coming but im sure its not a priority for either sprint or lg.
