I've got a galaxy S7 EDGE on Verizon and a 5x on fi. After 2 months of testing fi, i can say that the service is absolutely as good or better than verizon. So my question is, can i use a fi data only sim card in my S7 edge? I'm inclined to think that since fi operates on both gsm and cdma, it might work. I wouldn't be able to make or receive calls, but could use everything else. Has anyone tried it? I also read that you can actually make calls on a data only sim using hangouts dailer. How about sone feedback?

Keep in mind, the data-only SIM only connects to T-Mobile towers, it does't auto-switch.

By the way, your question would be best asked in the Project Fi forum, and you should try not to post the same question in multiple places (I see you posted in the S7E forum also) to reduce parallel discussions.

My understanding is that Project Fi sims will work in phones not specifically designed for Fi but that the automatic network switching (for the most part, between T-Mobile and Sprint towers) will not work. If I recall correctly, the non-Nexus phone with a Fi sim will connect only to the T-Mobile network.

PS: Oh, yeah - it won't do auto-switching to Wi-Fi calling either. Al of these functions (network switching, Wi-Fi calling) are part of the special software built into the Fi-supported phones such as the Nexus 5X, 6P, and Pixels.

I tried the fi forum a month ago - no luck. Multiple times gives you great answers.

Well, I bit the bullet and installed my new data only sim into my Verizon S7 EDGE. Booted it back up shut off wifi so that it's only option was using data. IT WORKED PERFECTLY. I was even able to make calls using the hangouts dailer. Then I remembered that all verizon phones are sold unlocked. So if you're fed up with big red and their ever-so-increasing fees, give project fi a try. Now I don't think that this will work as you stated, on sprint or open wifi. Might just be T-mobile, but more testing is needed.

It won't work on Sprint. As I noted before, the data-only SIM only works on T-Mobile networks. Yes, it will work on ANY WiFi connection but you'll have to manually connect. As long as you have a network connection, Hangouts Dialer will make and receive calls using your phone number.
