Hey all..

I know there has been a ton of similar questions and countless threads on the subject, but I would like to try to get a consensus from all of highly intelligent people in 1 place for those of us that are totally " wet behind the ears " when it comes to these Hero's and Android's in general.I've been doing as much reading as these old tired eyes can stand over the last week, here and elsewhere. So,if possible helping to corral some easy to do upgrades for myself and others who have never ever rooted a phone would be really helpful,to say the least.

For those of us who are using the latest updated .6 software such as my self..

1) Will doing the 1 button root that is out really work as what has been said. I have downloaded the 1.6 version of it and Astro file manager to my computer and then onto my Hero.

2) If it doesn't work for some reason, how do you revert back to what you had before attempting it ?

3) Can my carrier (Sprint) detect that this was attempted/done if I ever have to take it in for a repair ?

4) Is it possible to make a complete copy of my phone as it is right now with the current settings and programs onto my computer that I can easily replace any corrupted one on my phone ? If so what program would I use and does it have instructions to do this ?

I know the answer to following will be a subjective opinion to those using them, but knowing what works best for others is always a preferred thing for those of us that are scared crapless on screwing up our phones..Most all of those experienced at doing this was once where myself and others are right now,and having your experience to help guide us into the unknown is a blessing.

5) Which is the fastest most stable 2.2 Froyo type Roms out there right now. With and without sense and are there any screen shots of each that can be posted here to show what they look like?

6) How much does over-clocking these phones really help with general usage

7) Does over-clocking a non Froyo rom work better 2.1,or does it increase the potential even more with them with a 2.2 build ?

And lastly could someone list the steps in order from using the 1 button root to flashing a new rom for us 1st timers in plain English and then re-flashing back to the stock rom that was in use before rooting...Also what do we need/recommended to down load prior to doing anything..Please remember we are at the beginning of the learning curve here and most of the jargon used by most experienced person at this is a complete new language for us and is very confusing by just trying to learn it..

Your help and patience is most greatly appreciated..

I have not tried the 1 button root. I imagine one you root you will still have to follow directions from somewhere to set up the recovery image needed to install ROMs. It may be easier just to follow one of the complete rooting guides that includes installing the recovery image. Check out this post:

http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/28924-newbie-trying-root-2-27-651-6-a.html

2) If it doesn't work for some reason, how do you revert back to what you had before attempting it? You can run the current RUU - It will restore the phone back to stock like it is new from the store. There is a link to the .5 RUU in the above post that would return your phone to stock.

3) Can my carrier (Sprint) detect that this was attempted/done if I ever have to take it in for a repair ? Not if you run the RUU and effectivly return the phone to stock.

4) Is it possible to make a complete copy of my phone as it is right now with the current settings and programs onto my computer that I can easily replace any corrupted one on my phone ? If so what program would I use and does it have instructions to do this ? That is the first thing the guide to rooting will have you do. It is called a nandroid backup. You need to have recovery installed and you back up the exact state of the phone at that moment. Everything from programs to text messages to what part of a song you had an mp3 paused at.

5) Which is the fastest most stable 2.2 Froyo type Roms out there right now. With and without sense and are there any screen shots of each that can be posted here to show what they look like? As far as I know there is no Sense 2.2 ROM yet. The Cyanogen hero rom is the only working 2.2 rom I know of for CDMA hero. It is stable, and quite a few people appear to be using it as there main rom now. find it here:

I like breezy420's HoneyBun for a sense rom. It is a smooth fast 2.1 rom. Find it here:

6) How much does over-clocking these phones really help with general usage? A faster rom makes a difference, more than over clocking, I think. Overclocking is very easy to do however. You just need to "flash" a overclocked kernel in recovery (easier than it sounds). There are apps in the market to control how much it is overclocked. You will notice a difference even in just scrolling between home screens and typing.

7) Does over-clocking a non Froyo rom work better 2.1,or does it increase the potential even more with them with a 2.2 build ? Not sure what you are asking. You can overclock either.

Thank You

Hopefully someone that has used this new 1 button root can share their experiences with using it.

I am not real experienced with typing all of the command sequences needed to do the traditional way of rooting. Also being able to do this undetected is a great benefit to many interested in these procedures who have just started their plans like myself.

It is called a nandroid backup. You need to have recovery installed and you back up the exact state of the phone at that moment. Everything from programs to text messages to what part of a song you had an mp3 paused at.

OK..this is a program I have to install on my computer first correct ? It will let me take a snap shot of my phone as it is right now before doing anything else once I sync my phone via usb to the computer then..correct?

Does this Cyanogen hero rom allow you the option of over clocking the phone ? My questions regarding over clocking it just means is the performance with just a 2.1 new rom justify over-clocking or is recommended..same for the 2.2 rom..In other words is it worth doing it to both roms or does it cause too much instability to be beneficial to either? Is flashing a over clock kernel a totally separate process from installing a new rom like the one you mentioned ? If so,which over clock kernel is reputed to work the best with the least amount of issues ?

I do apologize for asking for some clarification on these matters and also for the number of questions.

Your help is much appreciated

Well..I used the 1 touch method and it says I am rooted and a superuser and just downloaded the free rom manager from the market..Phone still works:D:D

Now I just have to download what rom I want to try and the nanroid program ? Take a snap shot and copy it on the computer then go ahead and re flash it I think..

I can say even though this is kinda nerve racking to do any of this for a first timer,it really is super easy to do the 1 button root and then do the Nandroid back up and if a person of my limited experience can do it,then for most of the younger generation folks used to playing around with these devices shouldn't have any problem at all.

So..I got the back up done..I have the phone rooted..What would you guys do next ? I saw a line when doing the Nandroid BU that said to partition the SD card..Is this something that should be done before downloading any new rom's for the phone ? I understand a little about the reasoning for partitioning regular hard drives on PC and putting things in the new partition like the swap file for the browsers and such to speed things up,but never did do one..so..is this needed on these phones to do the same thing?
