I bit the bullet and ordered a new 128 GB Note 9 on the last pre-order day. I currently have the Note 5. It’s supposedly arriving tomorrow but my UPS tracking has it sitting in the same place for the last three days. But anyways…

I know you use smart switch to transfer over the majority of things. But I want to be sure that things go as seamless as they can. So I want to prepare my current Note 5 now to be ready.

I use my Google and Gmail account for backing up photos, contacts, and my calendar. I also have them so they work with my iPad. I believe I may have switched off my Samsung account because it was duplicating too many of my photos but I will have to check on that. is having the Samsung account on a good thing before using smart switch? Do I need to have my Samsung account on for anything else that’s going to update and transfer over?.

I am going to take some pictures of my current Note 5 screens and folder contents so I can re-add them the way I like them without pulling out my hair LOL. Any other pointers for a smooth transition ..they are appreciated... thanks!

When I don't start from scratch. I have my apps restored initially from Google. Then I use smart switch to get my app data and home screen back to how I had it on my previous phone. I've found that works best for me, and I upgrade every six months so I'm getting good at it 😃

I used smart switch to transfer all my stuff from S9+ to my Note 9 ..everything was very smooth and Samsung pass makes it more easy to auto login to all the apps

OK so if you using Samsung smart switch you would need to be logged into your Samsung account, and doesn’t that do the same thing as adding the apps from Google acct? What advantage does it have logging into Google first? Thanks

Also.... is there a way to get all the apps into the folders on the screens the way they currently work? That’s the part I hate is having to rebuild all my screens and folders.

I used SMS Backup & Restore when moving from my Pixel 2XL and it transferred all texts and call logs with zero issues; something that Smart Switch didn't do at all!

Free to download off Play; very easy to use. Just point it to your Google Drive to back up there

Did similar with Nova; just backed it up and restored when the Note 9 was up & running. Restored all apps into their folders with zero issues :)

I don’t care about my SMS and call logs. And I’m using the stock not nova LOL.

It was just advice on how I've done it.. Didn't say you had to do that

Good luck with that attitude!

Oh... no attitude,,l was just saying I don’t care about carrying over past conversations LOL. Sorry you took it the wrong way! Thanks for the advice it might help someone else :-)

Looks like today might be the day! UPS says my phone is on the truck for delivery today. Hopefully it gets here before 8 PM so I can play around with it. Any other tips and tricks to get this up and running smoothly is appreciated. Thanks!

Once you're in the transfer mode, you can select what you want to carry over. This does include the ability to place your app icons exactly how it is on your current device (assuming the grid pattern are the same; not sure what happens if it isn't).

I prefer smart switch. With SMS backup and restore, you may lose emojis and photos. Though this time, mine created a bunch of repeat posts. But doesn't matter to me. I just want to keep the old messages just in case.
