I have until Monday to figure out which phone to get and whatnot, so heres some questions;

1) Will the Samsung Intercept on Froyo be better than the Optimus on Gingerbread?
2) Can you port your phone number from MetroPCS to Virgin Mobile?
3) Is it easy for a new-to-android user to hack, root, etc the Optimus?
4) Is there a lot of good ROMs for the Optimus?

Thank you :)

Every single question has a yes answer. Except for #1, the answer is, the intercept can't ever be better.

1. Never. Don't even bother with the intercept, you'll regret ever getting it if you do.
2. Yeah, you can basically port any number, but you have to contact them about it.
3. It's pretty easy, but you should read all the guides first before doing anything. Once you have the recovery set up, it's nearly impossible to brick.
4. There are many ROM's for this phone. I can't name them all but most of them are 2.2 Froyo. 2.3 Gingerbread is a work in progress.

1) The Intercept, while on paper is faster than the optimus (800mhz vs. 600mhz.) is by all accounts a less powerful phone due to a couple of reasons. The biggest feature seems to be that the Optimus has dedicated processors for display and data that don't tap and lag out the actual system, giving it a 'feel' of being somewhat snappier and faster.

For a surprising amount of people, the fact the Intercept has a hardware keyboard is what sways them to it. Perhaps someone who has both devices could share their experiences, but everything I've read has led to the Optimus being an overall better experience.

2) I've never ported a number through MetroPCS, but I can't imagine it'd be difficult. Contacting both carriers to be sure, I'd imagine, is the way to go.

3-4) mmarz has created a thread *just* for questions like these! Link is in my signature. Check it out.

Goodnight, and good luck.

#1 summed up pretty nicely. I do prefer a physical keyboard; but not enough to let it be the deciding factor in my choice...

Thanks

Swype, and alternatives to it, really make typing on the Optimus quite good to be honest.

While I didn't switch from an Intercept, I came from a Blackberry, and I too was concerned. Get your Optimus, root it, flash it with a good rom, and learn Swype (or similar), you will be quite happy. For an even better phone, overclock it.

The difference between a stock Optimus V, and one with a rom, is equal to about a 25% overclock, it alone makes it feel like an entirely different class of phone. Add a 25% overclock and the phone feels every bit as smooth as far more expensive phone, the difference is drastic compared to stock. Yes, it void your warranty, but honestly, once it's done, you won't ever want to go back.

As for the difficulty, follow the tutorials, it's pretty much dead simple at this point.

The problem is, I dont know which rom to use, or what kernel, or what recovery... Thats what overwhelms me.

Well, I guess I have some reading to do; I just need to know ALL the ROMs that are out there, or else I'll never make up my mind... and another question would be; how do you get free apps and things like that when the phone is rooted and flashed?

There is no issue with trying multiple ROMs, you can flash and try until you find something you like. Also, just check the forum reviews to see what others think of the ROM. As far as apps, the Android Market will work on a rooted and ROMed device like normal. You could also use the Amazon market.

This link has all you need:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/opt...optimus-v-rooting-roming-modding-hacking.html

The market still works like normal for getting apps. Rooted doesn't change anything.

As for roms... Each has it's pros and cons.
That guide has a complete listing, but for someone new, and unsure, I would recommend Rodimus, as it's a very good place to start, as it's a complete, somewhat current solution where everything works. No muss, no fuss. Beyond that, they all are good and have their place, but you need to know what you want first. AOSP has some nice tweaks, Bumblebee seems to be the hardcore tweakers rom of choice because of how raw it is, Sllide has a nice theme and features, Nameless has some new groundbreaking features, and Harmonia seems to be just a really good, everyday type rom that everyone just seems to find pleasant. :) It's fast, has nice features, but it's not bloated, and has loads of room for apps.

As for recoveries, taken from Harmonia's info section...
Recommended recovery:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/optimus-v/61431-xionia-goodies-optimus-v-edition.html
It is what is used in Mmmark111's RomTools found here:
http://forum.androidcentral.com/opt...3-1-ex-recoveryflasher-tons-new-features.html

These are the most universal recoveries, they seem to work with almost everything out there.

Very informative, thank you very much :)

Yeah I had the intercept before my optimus (poor intercept was stolen from me). Anyway I noticed a huge difference between the two phones right out of the packaging. The only thing I really miss is the physical keyboard but swype more than takes care of that! Check this out too it may help you reach your own conclusion!YouTube - Optimus V vs Intercept

That video definitely made my decision rock-solid. Optimus it is... Intercept's colors seem to lack, the graphics are slow and choppy, and the sound seems too hollow. The only problem I see now, is the orientation delay from side-to-side; but I cant expect TOO much from a mid-range phone :P

But the final horrah was Angry Birds, I would NOT be able to put up with the -1 fps on the Intercept lol.
